A quick PF-Tek question..

hello shroomery,
i just had a question regarding the pf-tek grow method using BRF. about how long can i wait between making my jars, and actually sterilizing them? i know it should be done as soon as possible, but does it even matter, or will the sterilization process eliminate any contaminants that grow during this in-between timeframe. just curious because of my busy schedule i probably will have to wait between making my jars and sterilizing them. thanks for the help.

after you sterilize them (assuming your doing that part correct) wait 3-7 days before you nocc the jars just to make sure that nothing survived the PC.

thanks for the help myco, but i guess i should have worded my question a little better. what i meant to say was how long can you wait from the time you mix the BRF, verm, and water in the jars, until you sterilize them (PC or whichever method you prefer). i realize imediate sterilization would be best, but i was just curious. i'll also take your above advice when it comes time to inoculate, thanks again.

if the jars are tightly closed with no inocc holes then you can wait a few weeks. but like i said 3-7 days is fine for making sure there are no contams.

i think you still got the intent of his question wrong
you really want to sterilize within 24-48 hours. bacteria is the fastest growing form of contamination, and even in that short a time frame can begin some agressive growth. bacteria can actually form endospores in about 10 hours time (but we can assume some time beforehand for it to have veg'd enough to get to that point) and endospores are probably going to survive a steam sterilization, and can potentially survive a PC'ing even. of course you very well may get lucky and have no problem waiting several days even, but why risk it? try and figure out a time when you can immediately sterilize if at all possible, because once you've introduced moisture to that brf, its game on for the contams. even if it means waiting a few days before you can find the time to get started, it will save you a whole bunch of days if you end up with a contam and have to start all over again.
aside from the chance of contams surviving, another way to look at it is this: any contam that's in there eating your food is stealing away the nutrition you put in that jar for your mycelium! don't let 'em get away with it!
