Arthritis drug found in mushrooms
04 July 2006
Mushrooms could play a pivotal role in the treatment of arthritis, suggest scientists in Germany and Vietnam.
Mushrooms A team of researchers led by Christian Hertweck at the Leibniz-institute for natural products research and infection biology, Jena, Germany, have identified a series of compounds in mushrooms that they say are capable of treating rheumatoid and gouty arthritis.
Arthritis is a common chronic health problem, with rheumatoid arthritis affecting 1 in 50 people in the UK and gouty arthritis affecting 1 in 200. Drugs currently on the market can cause infrequent, but severe side effects.
Enzymatic processes control the inflammation of joints and tissues in arthritis. The researchers claim the compounds they have identified can block the enzymes that cause joints to become inflamed.
Rheumatoid arthritis is generally treated using drugs that block the uptake of the cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzyme by the body. As the COX-2 enzyme triggers inflammation, blocking this enzyme stops the pain. Gouty arthritis is caused by too much uric acid in the blood. Blocking xanthine oxidase (XO), an enzyme involved in the formation of uric acid in the body, relieves the symptoms of this disease.
Hertweck and colleagues say the compounds they extracted from mushrooms show COX-2 and XO enzyme blocking activity similar to that of the leading drugs currently on the market.

I bet the compounds are being found in Amanita Muscaria, and variants. Could be Reishi, but my moneys on the A. Muscaria.

The article implies there are more then one chemicals extracted from more then one mushrooms. Any other guesses for the other chemicals origins?

I guess the mushrooms known as Chaga, Inonotus species, but I cheated, I followed the link in the references of the above linked article and found the original paper from Molecular Biology journal;
Inotilone and related phenylpropanoid polyketides from Inonotus sp. and their identification as potent COX and XO inhibitors
If you wanna read the paper it is here; http://www.rsc.org/delivery/_ArticleLink...b604505g&Iss=13

I agree great news indeed, arthritis is a big problem now a days. If you're interested, I thik you may be able to get Inonotus species mushrooms in bulk from Aloha Medicianls, at alohamedicinals.com it may not be on their page, but I know they sell bulk amounts of all their products in 1kg tins for about $75, it's a heck of a deal if you ask me, that's 2 grams a day for almost two years... but don't quote me on them having it, I just know John Holiday was doing a paper on this species a few years back for the World Mushroom Society conference in Korea...
