Wet Perlite VS Ultrasonic Humidifier
    #5820348 - 07/04/06 03:09 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Which one do you guys think works better for enclosed bulk grows?

I realize that with the ultrasonic humidifier, condensation will develop in the bottom and will have to be drained, else it'll rot the cakes...but aside from this bit of extra work, would it improve the terarium's conditions versus simply using wet perlite?

bulk grows do not involve fruiting cakes directly.

bulk grows can be done without perlite or a humidifier.

try the monotub method.

...if you want to grow bulk

sorry, didn't mean "bulk grows" I meant very large numbers of cakes.

okay.

perlite is easier.

water maintenance is a pain with ultrasonics.

perlite is easy and consistent.
most people whom use pmp's, use perlite.

thing is, I'm not overly worried about the "easier" portion of the grow...I have very little else to do with my time aside from writing term papers and tending to shrooms (tis why I started getting into growing in the first place)

What I'm more concerned with is which would be better for the quality of the mushrooms? or does it really even matter?

i use 2 mes tek cases with a ultrasonic humidifier and fogger just put a tray in the case(i usually use one the size of tin foil turkey size tray) and this is how i get a "bulk grow" i love it i have mine rigged so it can go 7 days i have a hose setup so it drains on its own and i always use 10/90 peroxide/water in the humidifier its on timer for 5 times a day and the fogger goes once in the morning for 3 hours makes a neat fog on the floor of the case and shrooms i love it

Neither is gonna effect mushroom quality

cool thanks. So essentially it just comes down to how much work I feel like doing as to which one I wanna do...sheesh...looks like I chose the wrong hobby to have "busy work" for. lol

Don't mean to highjack your thread, but what did everyone pay for their ultrasonics?

And how many times you want to fuck up. Ultrasonics are a major pain. You can nail them down, but they'll never achieve the perfect humidification of perlite.

Ultrasonics are best for large to very large FCs.

well...I'm going to be growing in a 150 gal deep freeze....I have 48 cakes now that I'm going to be putting in there. would the ultrasonic be appropriate for this size?

By the way, kranked, I payed 30 for mine in cash at wal-mart....but I've seen them on the net for as low as 10$

also, aside from FCs, curing, printing, and syringing...is there anything else I need to think about?

Yep. The bigger the FC the more appropriate an ultrasonic is IMO. Using them with tubs is when I think they become less useful and more problematic.

> also, aside from FCs, curing, printing, and syringing...is there anything else I need to think about?

Incubation. I would also do a LC or three.

can't ever forget about sterility.

ultrasonics are about 4 bucks at a goodwill.

liquid culture, soaking, rinsing, pressure cooking, chemical adjustment, inoculation, contaminations, spawning, pasteurizing, casing choice, all the pinning parameters, cleaning, trimming,
drying, blah, blah...

this could certainly be a job if you wanted it to.
