I brewed an APA 3 days ago, and will be brewing a hefe sometime soon. Brewing is surprisingly alot like mycology, infact yeast is considered a fungi. So it was completely natural to make a jump from mycology to zymurgy.
If you really, REALLY love beer and the brewing process, you could open up a microbrewery. But you better win some gold medals with your beer first.

my neighbor had several buckets fermenting all the time, similar to growing, I guess... every couple weeks he started a new batch and bottle the previous. Good stuff usually. He moved to Telluride and left his homebrew book with me.

A great place to start is How to Brew (free online "book") by John Palmer. When your ready to dive in deep, pick up Designing Great Beers by Ray Daniels. I always have this book close to me when formulating a recipe, its pretty much my brewing bible. But experience, as always, is the biggest teacher. I wish you well, and perhaps someday I'll be picking up a sixer of your craft brew.
