I was thinking about getting a metal detector and trying to find some old coins or jewelry. I know the odds of finding something great are slim, but I would enjoy it nonetheless. Anyone here enjoy this hobby? If so, do you ever go to the beach with it?

My grandfather did. He died when I was young, but two tasty bits of info.
Incredibly packed public beaches = jewelry.
Any beach after an orgasmic storm = all.
You'll also be able to find your body weight in sea glass in no time at all. I love blue

don't be pissed at me just because your life is so boring that you need metal detecting to spice things up

It's actually quite relaxing, and you will eventually hit the motherload. Besides, why not find money, jewelry and shit while enjoying a walk on the beach?

I've got a Musketeer Advantage by MineLab. Never go to the beach. Mostly for relic hunting around old foundations, etc.

Metal detecting is one of the few hobby's that will not only get you outside, but will also also pay for itself.
People's yards are a great place for older coins and stuff. Since metal detectors have been around for quite a while, most parks are pretty hunted out in terms of older stuff, but they are constantly replenished with new money/jewelry/etc. Schools, college/university common areas, sporting fields etc are good places.
I have one, but haven't used it for the last couple years. I found lots of old silver, rings, tokens, "things" etc. Never used it at a beach tho.
If you get one, spend at least a couple hundred bucks on a decent one (again it will pay for itself).

I'm just curious, what kind of jewelry that would be worth anything would you find? Do metal detectors pick up like, gold chains and stuff?
