Help with IDing (Yellow, freckles)
    #5818230 - 07/03/06 11:31 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Was walking in my backyard a few weeks ago and I came across these mushrooms. Just curious if anyone could help me identify what they are (The yellow ones). I've looked around a bit online and I'm pretty sure that it's some kind of amanita (the one with the freckles, anyway), but I figured I'd post on here just to see if anyone else has any insight. I've got tons of these growing back there, so I'd like some clarity of their identification. Thanks in advance =)

He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.

Hey proon, welcome. The one in your hand in the top pic is most likely A. muscaria var. formosa and I would say that the bottom one is too, where the warts have been washed off by rain.
But, you are missing much information. Information that when messing with this family of mushrooms could be the difference between life and death.
You should absolutely get the info. as outlined in the rules thread before you think about ingesting any of those.
That's one hell of a pin, too

Don't eat aminetas unless they are nice and red. The problem is that both muscaria and pantherina can have a golden/yellow cap. If its a muscaria then you'll trip, and if its pantherina your going to have a very horrible death. So I advise against eating those ones.

Hi Dave,

That is a bunch of BS. A. muscaria and it's variants, pantherina included will not make you trip or bring a horrible death. The LD50 for mice is 3.8 mg / kg for muscimol and 15 mg / kg ibotenic acid.

Here is a fairly decent link on the subject from CalPoly.

Personally I dunno about the tripping and/or possible death, but I was under the impression that Amanita pantherina is a species of it's own, rather than a variant or A. muscaria?

Also, I was talking to a proffesor of botany at a university in Holland who specialised in fungus/molds that attack plants...his interest on the side was also mycology though and he was telling me about the mushrooms he finds when he goes hunting for them in the forest. I asked him if he ever ran into any Amanita species and he was like ya all the time. According to him A. pantherina IS deadly, whereas A. muscaria will just make you feel sick (and trip I suppose, but he obviously didn't delve into that...)

The top picture could certainly be A. muscaria var formosa. I don't think the second pic is though. Warts can get washed off, but that mushroom also looks like the cap has some striations on the edge which I don't believe you see with A. muscaria. I've been seeing a lot of those yellow, smooth capped amanitas around too, rain or no rain. There is a yellow variant of A. caesare that has been described, and those have striate margins.

Uhh...correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought A. muscaria var formosa didn't grow in Michigan, only on the west coast?

Me personally, I would NEVER eat any type of amanita. Its just too risky, 95% of that type of mushrooms are poisonous or deadly.

I wouldn't eat an amanita either - probably. Actually formosas are more common on the east coast than the west coast. And in Michigan, they are the only form of muscaria that grows. In fact they can grow in huge numbers and be very large there.

Would a microscope be crucial to absolute identification? or are there certain traits of the mushrooms mentioned that can be seen by the naked eye?
