Actually that's quite wrong. The water in the pot will NEVER reach 212F so it can't boil anything (water that is) that's in it. If the jars are in contact with the bottom heat can be transferred to the jars and boil them, but the water won't boil what's in it. Jars don't make goot contact with a flat bottomed pot so it's unlikely that they boiled inside.

I don't use cakes anyway.
I do see your point.

so you don't use any poly-fil, tyvex, or micropore with grains?
just tinfoil?

It all comes down to personal opinion and experience, personally the verm layer on top isn't that difficult to add, so why not.

Sometimes I would put a button sized hole in the lid and stick polyfill in it. I've also used a short length of copper tubing sealed into the lid filled with polyfill. But mostly I just used tinfoil over a lid with 1-4 holes in it. If the jars stall then loosen the lids a bit. I think it was PF that suggests taping the lids to the ring to make it sort of one piece. That sounded interesting but I never tried it.

I never thought it was worth the work to make tyvek lids and fool with them, but it would probably shave a day or three off the colonization. That doesn't really matter though if you've got a bunch of jars going on a good cycle.

k so my question is are people using 2 layers of tinfoil? i am doing BRF in 1/2 pint jars and i added the dry verm layer and i too also have noticed the 1 contaim i have is at a innoc point. So are people filling the jars completly with substrate, then putting a piece of tinfoil over the jars, putting the lids on with the 4 innoc holes in it, then another piece of tinfoil over the lids as a 2nd barrier for protection? im a little lost with what everybody is saying. Does the substrate still breath properly with tinfoil?

You just need one layer of heavy duty tinfoil. If you have some of the thinner stuff then use two layers. The tinfoil is just a cover or cap. It's not airtight, so it does let the solution breathe a little.
