Birdseed (millet) Help
    #581661 - 03/17/02 07:35 PM (21 years, 11 months ago)

i THINK i have the terminology correct "birdseed=millet) please correct me if im wrong. I got three questions, and i thank you in advance for any help :

1. Can i use whole grain white rice with vermiculite as a substrate?
( im aware you can use almost anything as a substrate, but has anyone used whole grain (white rice, not brown) ?

2. Can i use birdseed if i dont cook it for a little bit first, so it'll be raw birdseed + vermiculite? Also, how would i sterilize it?

3. Peatmoss, how do i sterilize it, and what would i use it with?

Also (sorry, i know i said 3), if anyone can reply with a birdseed tek or a peatmoss tek, it would be of great help, also if anyone has their own way to grow with those materials/substrates, it would help alot. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP YOU CAN PROVIDE.

main ingredients i have would be vermiculite/perlite/peatmoss/rice(white rice)/i can ground up or put the rice in a coffee grinder to make it into rice flour like BRF.

Yes, birdseed is composed of mostly millet.

1) No, white rice has no nutritional value

2) No, you use just birdseed, no verm needed

3) Peatmoss is used in a 50/50 casing mix. Sterilize by PC, or baking in an oven.

Get BRF and Verm... its 1/4 cup water, 1/4 cup brf, 3/4 cup verm per 1/2 pint jar. Mix, and sterlize. Brown rice flour is needed. YOu can use rye flour as well however.
