First experiment - PF Tek - *PICS*
    #5815354 - 07/03/06 10:10 AM (17 years, 9 months ago)

Hello there again ..

So I managed to make my first "cultivation" and have some questions needing answers urgently.

I used this tek as a reference and made some modifications due to the lack of vermiculite and perlite.

Instead of vermiculite I used a common potting soil to make the substrate. I was more like "let's see if it works" but never really thought it would work. It did !

Today have passed 9 days since inoculation and most of the jars have white marks with 2 or 3 centimeters.

The FAE is being made with an air-pump. Inside of the terrarium I have a small jar with the air-pump bubbler inside of it. That way I provide the shrooms some fresh air while the humidity goes high.

This is a little hard to explain but later this week i'll post some pictures.

Today I thought it would be good to put some drops of bleach inside the water jar. I guess this way the terrarium gets disinfected. But I'm afraid the mycelium gets "disinfected" too ... What do you think ?

Well, i'll update this post as soon as I can take the pictures.

***** EDIT *****

This box has little space for the Orissa India to grow so I have this new one. In this box i'm gonna use the "Poorman's Pod" tek and i'm wondering how am I gonna put the thermostat inside of it. Any ideas ?

Having the pump sending fresh air to the box do I still need to open it several times a day in order to refresh the air ?

Peace,
Alice.

Use peroxide in the water jar.. Like 5% peroxide to 95% distilled water.

And potting soil is working!!!?? I wanna see some pics man!

I already made that bleach thing. But it's only about 1% of it.

Other thing .. having the pump sending air to the terrarium, do I still need to open the box a couple of times a day to refresh the air ?

I've just bought the geolite. Is it necessary to sterilize it ? Do the "Poorman's Pod" work in any of the growing phases [while in jars / casing / fruiting] ?

First post updated.

*New pic of the same jar*

The air-pump/jar thing makes the humidity go up to 80/85%. Is it OK during colonization ? I've heard 70% is perfect.

humidity is not needed for colonization only fruiting. You might have to still fan the pmp till you get the holes right with your airpump. I had to udjust mine for awhile till I got the right humidity and FAE going without fanning.

Hello everyone !

I made 2 mistakes in this first experiment.

One was not waiting for the needle to cool down after heating it with a flame. I made it before the inoculation of every jar. I guess that's why only 3 out of 8 jars are colonized.

The other one was to inoculate on only one spot of the jar. I guess it will take much longer for mycelium to colonize .. Should I shake the jars a little to help colonization ?

Thanks,
Alice.

Now I'm sure only 3 jars were successfully inoculated. All the others had their spores killed as they passed through the not-so-cold needle.

I prepared a spore syringe and wonder if i can re-inoculate the jars that didn't colonize. Can anyone answer my question, please ?

Alice.

Yeah, i was wanting to know if you can inoculate a non-colonized jar that had been already attempted a time before.

i would imagine you could, as long as it hasnt been too long...you dont want to innoc if there isnt enough moisture

sure you can innoc it, you can innoc a bowl of chicken soup for all it matters   the question is do you want to?

perhaps you innoculations failed because of the needle being too hot, but i really really doubt it.  surgical steel that the needle is made of cools extremely fast, and as soon as liquid flows through its cooled further; spores need to be held at damaging temps for several minutes.. not the fraction of a second they pass through the needle... so its possible but i really doubt that was the source of your problem.

your jars could have failed for other reasons, bacteria could have gotten to them first, the moisture content could have been off, etc.

spend the time and make fresh jars, don't bother re-innoculating ones that didn't grow last time, because there's a good chance they won't grow again this time either.

Have you put your jars in the FC for colonization ?
Coz that might be you problem.
When colonizing your jars they suppose to be in total darkness, no need for humidity it will only do damage to them.the light might stopped the colonization. and it a waste of time and effort. put them in a dark box at a warm place. thats all, after they are fully colonized, put them in the FC.

I'm now gonna do some more new cakes.

Potting soil + BRF + Oat

By the way, does it really have to be in a total dark environment ? Won't normal light [dark at night, bright at day] do ?

Alice.

its best to keep in the dark, especially towards the end of colonization so that light as a pinning trigger will be most effective.

but light certainly won't stop it from colonizing, and doesn't really harm things any.

Damn. The substrate is too wet and I have no way to drain it. If I leave it overnight, will it be OK tomorrow ?

It's like 30ºC at night here and 40ºC outside during day-time so I think tomorrow morning it will be fine. Or am I totally wrong ?

I need urgent answers please !

Alice.

The moisture content wont have changed overnight. Re-do them.
