No, this is not true. A mushrooms trip is not caused by an immune system reaction against a bacteria in the blood. He is just ignorant.

Well, it's not exactly that simple:
Quote:
The known causes of food poisoning can be divided into 2 categories: infective agents and toxic agents.
* Infective agents include viruses, bacteria, and parasites.
* Toxic agents include poisonous mushrooms, improperly prepared exotic foods (such as barracuda), or pesticides on fruits and vegetables.
[...]
# Mushroom toxins: Illness can range from mild to deadly depending on the type of mushroom eaten. Often there is nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Some types of mushrooms produce a nerve toxin, which causes sweating, shaking, hallucinations, and coma.
Certainly, we can agree that psilox'in compounds are not highly poisonous, but definitely does produce symptoms consistent with those described as hallucinations and sometimes bodily discomfort.
All in all, I think it's a grey area to say that you trip because of food poisoning, because certainly you don't trip in all cases of food poisoning. The effects of the drug (which is generally agreed to be the cause of the trip) do fit the description of being a toxin, albeit one that would almost never be fatal to ingest.

If you accidentally ate food that had psilocybin mushrooms in it, you could call it food poisoning.... The description would be more accurate with something like Amanita though...

I honestly don't think intention plays a role in determining if something is a poison or not. If you ate strychnine, you'd die because of poisoning regardless of if it was intentional or not.

Well psilocybin mushrooms are not poisonous. But, if you accidentally ate them, you may believe that you were poisoned. You may call that food poisoning - More incorrect then correct? probably. But still likely to be called that.

A poison does not have to be deadly to be toxic.
One could make arguments about the mental/neurological effects of psilocybin as toxic, but it's easiest to simply point out that some people experience nausea or stomach discomfort from eating psilocybin-containing mushrooms.

I'm not saying that you TRIP because of food poisoning, but that the effects could also be considered food poisoning because of:
