can't get LC to spawn to BRF
    #5814705 - 07/03/06 03:40 AM (17 years, 6 months ago)

I've grown some killer looking Golden Teacher LC. I inoculated 3 cakes with it.

After around 7-10 days I decided that nothing was going to happen (I understand that LC is supposed to be quick), so I set the jars out to make room in the incubator. They were just sitting out at room temperature with pretty much constant light exposure.

After about 2 days of this, I see two nice white circles of mycelium. One in each jar. So I immediately put them back in the incubator. They have started to grow, and the cake is colonizing. The third cake, however, still hasn't done anything. I also used the most LC on this third cake.

Why won't the LC in this third jar spawn to the BRF and why did 2 days of room temp w/ light cause the LC to spawn to the BRF?

I incubate at 84 degrees, btw.

Thanks.

Sounds like an interesting predicament... this, i doubt, is a major factor, however, it may be worth noting that you want an incubation temp of about 80-82... because a high temp, 84-85, will make the jars about 89-90 on the inside when it gets more colonized... This can cause problems. Usually with an incubator initial air temp of about 80, with some a good amount of colonizing jars in there, it will have air temp of 82-83 w/ the heat produced from the jars... so again, at this stage, i doubt this makes a difference with your problem, but may help you in the future (especially if you end up with a full tub of colonizing jars... very warm in there)... but this could solve your problem completely too... who knows...  :crazy2:

This sacrament, this prayer, beyond the world of lies
Guide me clearly through that which I dont understand
Give me strength to find the path
Help me fight any demons as you flow through me wholely
This is my prayer, that you protect me from evil, and bring me closer to peace
And open up my eyes, so i can see things as you do
Amen

i messed around with a couple diff temps and i find it best at 80-82 in my TIT. any lower or higher and things just got real slow or no growth at all when higher.

Ok, I have lowered my temperature to around 81 degrees.

I do have two incubators, though, and one has been running at a steady 82-83 wihle the other hits 84-85.

Other than this LC problem I haven't noticed any difference in growth speed. It's definitely worth dropping the temp though, thanks for the tip.

um, you said you used the most lc in your third uncolonized jar. that could be your problem, if you didnt adjust for moisture content (ie, when you made your substrate, made it a little dry to compensate), you could have over done it on the moisture... in which case, it'll colonize very slowly, if at all... I'm assuming that's why the other 2 started when you took them out of the incubator. they had a chance to dry out in the open air a little. I'm sure they would have taken off at some point, probably the same as if you would have left them in the incubator... some things just take more time.
