"mexican hat"
    #5813993 - 07/02/06 10:41 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

OK i asked my hippie friend if he had any shrooms for sale and he was like "dude, they are all over here!". so he goes outside and 10 seconds later comes back with some mushrooms that he called "Mexican hats", now i trust this hippie and all but hell he is a pretty cracked out character. So can anyone give me the scientific name for this? and a description? i will ALSO give the description of the ones he gave me, OK here it goes.

Cap: very light tan and it actually looks like a sombrero
Climate: i live at the base of a mountain in Montana. i don't no what climate that would be sorry but he found them right in some grass
Stem: NOT hollow, DOES NOT BRUISE
Height: about 4 inches
Gills: nice large evenly spaced gills.
sorry English class wasn't my strongest subject. but if u want a picture just say so.

I'd like to see a pic. Sounds pretty sketchy.
I've never heard the term "mexican hats" and I don't think there are any psilocybes growing in your area right now.
I could be wrong

hmm hate to say it but thats not it, i have studied the picture extencively and compaired to what i have. i see big differences in the stem, My stem is not as wide and you can see were it connects to the cap. second, my "nipple" isnt that dark , on ANY of the mushrooms. and now that the mushroom has dried its gills are all wavy, i dont no if thats normal or not but ill note it. also the cap doesn't curve up untill the VERY ends, its actually a very slow declining (convex) cone shape. If none of this makes sence i still blame my lack of payin attention in English class

As to what the mushroom actually is, well everyone is just making best guesses, as it's very difficult to ID a dried mushroom, so it's quite possible this is something different and eating is deeply discouraged (please do some research into mushroom poisoning and you will forever be dissuaded from eating unknown mushrooms). But, i think it can be fairly stated that you have more chance of that being a magic quarter that that being a magic mushroom. Please let Mr. Hippie know that his Mexican Hats are really just plain ol' Montana Hats and in the future please take his recommendations with a few more grains of salt than you may have in the past.

Lol man, I would never takes shrooms from some "cracked out character" who walks off and comes back with shrooms 10 mins later. Either way by that time you would expect to see some bruising...

Damn hippies

hmmm, ok so yesterday when he picked them another kid (he is like 23?) ate 2 caps, today i asked if he felt anything and he said his stomach was upset but he defenetely felt something. I should also note that this kid grew up in washinton and has had ALOT of experiances with magic mushrooms. And i dont know why you guys keep sayin that its hard to identify this mushroom when its "dry" . u cant tell the difference between a dry one and a wet one, besides feeling it, then he compaired liberty caps to these and said they seem related in some aspects of there characters.
p.s. im not tryin to protect my hippie friend/other friend. im just using my knowledge to the best of my ability to get an accurate id on these.

also, is there ANYWAY IN THE WORLD! to get a 100% fool proof ID? like take them to some chemestry lab and tell them to find out what the hell they are?

Well I would guess that the 23? year old was feeling like he was ether going to puke or shit himself..

You can not get a good ID from a dry mushroom its bad practice and you do run a chance of eating a bad mushroom that looks like a good mushroom...

Taking UFM's from a long hair is also bad practice..
Ether learn what you are looking for and hunt them yourself ..
Or don't do them at all..

Oh ya you live in Montana... Not Washington.. Two totally different mushroom states so your friend from Washington may be a pro there it makes him a Nube in Montana..

In this case, even though it is pretty dry, it's obvious that it is not an active.

What is the point in eating it?

You are not going to get an ID beyond genus (Marasmius or Collybia) from this message board. If you don't know why we can't ID dried mushrooms then you should do some reading.

And good luck finding a mycologist to identify your mushroom for you. Most of them have more pressing concerns.

Shroomy Dan is correct and it would cost you about $250 dollars and up to have a mushroom analysed at a University lab, unless you are in school and can analyse it yourself in a school, where I do not think you are.

So many mushrooms, so little time. There are no shortcuts.
There may be guides that deal more specifically in your region, google it.
