Product test
    #5813541 - 07/02/06 08:39 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Ok, I've been told my cutting method is a pain in the ass http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/5703095/an/0/page/2

Ok agreed. Decided to test a easy to do method that I liked. Tested something called a EZ-Clone. (Now go to the ez-clone site you guys can build this thing for very cheap with hardware store stuff but I'm lazy and I'll hand over a buck for molded parts but it is over priced).

To do this just take the cutting, dip in gel, put in the center of the foam and insert. Fill with water turn on and done.

Well this is one week later.

A very simple idea that seems to work pretty well. Water was just plain tap that wasn't even ph adjusted. No domes or misting is needed. Costs to much but it gets the full 4 stars or two thumbs up.

(you can make your own version in about 30 to 45 min  )

How much is it gonna cost?*

*Costs around $250, and my first idea is that you could use those little tiny yougurt cups to hold the foam plugs, ahaha.

The water pump , that's gonna be a bitch though. I was thinking maybe a sump pump, but I dont that'd be powerful enough to force the water (willow water :smirk: ) through the spray nozzles, which could be those kind on a spray bottle, just twist for mist. Maybe you'd need some kind of air compressor or some shit, I dont know.

I'm thinking it's gonna take more than 40 minutes though

Well turns out the pumps in those is called a "danner mag drive pump", and you can get one for about $75. Just had to look at the ez-clone site a little closer

Well it's been 5 more days for a total of 12.
Top looks the same

But the root area looks just a little diferent.

Much faster then root cubes or rockwool.

No it doesn't use a airstone. That is aquaponics where the roots actually start under water with a airstone providing the oxygen. (a good method by the way)

With this method the cuttings are suspended over sprinklers that shoot the water up at the cuttings. This has ben the fastest way to root I've seen so far. They are pretty much ready to plant at 8 days.

See, that;s what I dont get though, the planting part. Do you just put that in a hole in the soil? Normally those roots would be growing out in 1000 different directions, now they'll hang together kinda like wet mop strings, when you plant they are all gonna be lumped together and all on top of eachother, but apparently that's okay?

ps- that ez-cloner really is the shiit

Yes it is ok.Roots are smart they'll find their way.

And man you know what a homade version of this is,a glass half full of water with saran wrap several layers thick on top, water change every 2 days.

Aka the first clone method i ever used didn't even use root gel.

dropping cuts in a glass of water is hardly the same thing as  that ez clone..  the mist those put out is the key to the roots..
pricey yes,but pays for itself..
after 10 years and 100's of cuts,i can honestly say your dead wrong

You know it wouldn't have been much harder to just tell the people,If you put a pond pump in a water resivoure, then run hose perforated with an old syringe into a 20 gal tote cut in half with a drain hose at x height then put a lid on top with 2 inch hole plugged with flora foam you could have one for 50 bucks, but thanks for pointing out how wrong you feel I am for that being the first way I ever cloned something and feeling it was similar.

With these cloners gel isn't needed but using it works much better.

With no gel

With gel

To me that is the best thing about them. They draw up water threw the stem. Since they are in contact with water not just a wet cube they can draw in enough water to where they need no dome at all hell you don't even have to mist em. Just cut put it in the machine and forget it.

What I really like about it is leaf material can touch and rot won't start there. Much easier method to use for cloning.

Oh yeah, some people like to use cubes cause they can move the cuttings easier or take them to a club easier and so on. Use the water cloner and just leave the cutting till you see the little white bumps starting then put them in a cube. Now what is good about this is you see the bumps before putting in the cube so it's like germinating a seed in a towel before moving it to dirt. Since you saw it start you know it's gonna be a good cutting and this will save you money in the long run is supplies like cubes for starters and it will save on space used for taking the cuttings.

Not a bad idea but you'd probably be better off with a ultrasonic but I'm not sure if that would be enough.
