Help on casing topic
    #5813470 - 07/02/06 08:20 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

I am getting into casing grain trays at this juncture in my mycological education. Take a look at this photo. Looks like a pretty good pinset, right. I had one like this the last time and every last shroom aborted, the largest getting up to about an inch. I searched the posts and did a lot of the reading and concluded that my last abort situation was likely caused by lack of moisture. I did not mist at all and never added any extra water (plus for two days I was running lower than desired humidity). OK so during this same time I had two other trays that were marginally successful, 2 small flushes each (only about 50g wet for both trays and both flushes, the fruits were small and it was not a bumper crop). Those also were never misted. Now I know that misting is needed and I am likely so see better crops. I did not know that a good deal of misting was needed because I never needed to mist my cakes and got good results. So from the reading I know now, but here is my dilemma - you see my little pins going on there (the photo shows the exact stage they are at right now). Many of the threads on misting oppose to directly misting pins. My tray has a small layer of straight, slightly moistend vermic at the bottom. Can I just add distilled water, say with a syringe, to this vermic layer to feed water to the tray. There is already some shrinkage of the tray contents and I could just use the syringe through the openings on the sides. What do you think? Help me to make this tray grow the rest of the way. Thanks,
f

Read my pinning strategy first off. Once pins are set then frequent misting are very much in demand just keep your FAE's enough so that the surface dries somewhat between mistings. Developing fruitbodies absorb water like a sponge expanding as a result. GL BTW killer pinset bro!

OK. Very good. I had not found that thread yet, I read it, and it filled in a lot of the gaps. One other question though. Regarding patching or the adding of casing material after flushes: How is the best way to have clean casing material always at hand. I sterilize my 50/50. I would assume you don't sterilize or even pasteurize everytime you do a small patch or add. I'm curious as to how you handle this. I keep left over casing to be used for patching in the frig but I get nervous about using it if it has been more that a few days from when I sterilized it.
thanks,
f

I patch w/ verm it doesn't hold much contams.. and if your on ur second flush then your myc have healed enough to fight off a little..

don't use a syringe to poke it... that scratched the myc... opens it to con tams... also consider cold shocking.. misting is usually enough for casings but I tried to dunk it once and it worked.. just make sure u drain the excess water off so there isn't to much water... to much is bad to.. just mist enough for the top layer to be wet.

Looks great! Keep on trying!!!

I sterilize my casing material in the pressure cooker (without any contam issues) which allows me to do a couple extra jars to keep around for patching.

The sides of the contents of the tray have shrank somewhat so with using a syringe to inject water down the sides I would not be poking through the myc only adding water to the verm layer at the bottom of the tray. You see, I read how its supposed to be done from Hyphea's thread but I never misted before this pinset shown on the photo. So now I am asking about damage control for this particular tray. The pins are very small and I still don't know if I should mist until they rise a bit. That is why I thought that adding some water to the lower vermic layer might be a good mitigating step until I can mist regularly. Thanks for the comments and still looking for a bit more.
