Ok so ive heard a lot of debate between waiting 3 extra days after your jars are fully colonized and not waiting 3 days? What does everybody think? Should i give them a few extra days to make sure they are 100% colonized?

I am an intermediate, not an old pro, but I have seen many jars. I can say that I have never seen a jar that appeared fully colonized from the outside that was not fully colonized throughout, at least with quart jars that is. I would not wait the extra time. The extra time allows for bacteria or other contams to set in plus you want to get the myc at its active peak. Older myc often does not do as well.

If you shake your jars midway through the colonization process (I do mine at 5% and 30%) then you're very likely to have the inside fully colonized when the outside is done. Or at least very close.
But unless there is some reason why you simply cannot wait an extra 2-3 days -- and you're willing to risk the possibility of a contam if you're wrong -- wait the extra time.

I have seen this, it can appear to be fully colonized but if it's not a dense white blanket of mycelium on the outside, I always give it extra time

this isnt correct, bacteria usualy occurs because of problems with water content and will stop it from colonizing completely, if it's 99% colonized and broken up for a casing you're more likely to have an issue with green mold, if it's 100% you've no place for the molds to take hold

Its often the case that the outside will appear fully clonized while in the center grains are more sparsly colonized. this may be because of better air access to air along the sides of the jar. When this is used to inoculate bulk, colonization often does not occur from many grains which are less colonized and so is less than optimum. Even waiting those extra few days does not ensur that the central grains are well colonized. This has been my experience with popcorn, other grains may behave differently. you can investigate if this phenomenum is occuring and it is a good idea to do so if unsure of colonization of central grains.Use a sterile spoon to spoon out some grain and check how the center is doing.many people may be suprised by what they find. What I do which I think is the best strategy is to wait until the out side is close to fully colonised then i shake up the jars just enough to break up and redistribute the grains. One thing this does is recreate heaps more air space.Once the grain recovers(three days max) its perfect for inoculation.

I am still a newbie.. but what I have noticed with some of my jars int he past is that they end up drying out if they sit to long past full conlonization... My z-strain actually started eating through so much of the brf jar that it looked as though it was bruised where the jars were inoculated...
And also when its nearing the end i flip my jars over... give them a little air flow...

I probably should have noted that i am doing BRF in 1/2 pint jars... Does this make a difference in what everybody has posted??
