Do colonizing jars need air exchange?

Items used: - 8 single quart jars - 1 cup rye per jar - 3/4 cup water
The jars were sterilized in a PC for at least 1 hour at 10 PSI.
The jars ended up all being vacuum sealed. Two of the jars sucked in about 5 CC's each of spores. The other 6 jars received 2 CC's after pressure was equalized.
It has now been 1 week and 3 days and no mycelium is showing. The jars are closed tight and the syringe whole is covered with aluminum tape. No contams have shown yet. Everything looks the same as the day of inoculation.
Since these jars are so air tight shut, should I open and close them every once in a while for air exchange? IMO, I think they would need some type of air exchange to grow but am afraid of contams.
This is my first time growing with Whole Rye Grain but I have used the PF-Tek many times with great results.

Another question then, did I just kill any spores that may have tried to grow? Or would it be just like storing the spores in a syringe?

they might still be good, you need to put filters in you grain lids. it sounds like you have the inj. port covered in silicone. you also need a filter port. check out this tek: http://www.shroomery.org/index.php/par/26177
thats what i do, actually, now i put a layer of micropore tape over the hole, then the tyvek layer.

Ever since i took the tape off my PF-tek jars they really sped up in colinization. They don't need massive FAE like when they are fruiting. But the holes let in just the right amount of air in. Also when they are all colinized besides the bottom it helps to place the jars upside down for a few hours, the cake will slide down a bit makeing a air space on the top, really helps IME

No they need Gas Exchange
-------------------- Getting the most out of your casings!, A pinning strategy. Oyster Shell "Flour" $2 for 1lb. a hell of a deal Not what is overlay but rather what overlay is Gas Exchange vs. FAE "We all have priorities. I used a closet once setup a nice little lab trouble was all the shit that was in there ended up in the bedroom that pissed off the GF then I ended up dumping her as she was getting in the way of my sterile culture technique! Ya I got priorities too!!!"

In depth
A high CO2 level at the initial phase would be 10,000 wich is ideal for mycellium growth, closer to the jar finishing a drop to 5,000ppm's of CO2. When mycellium breaks down its food source it creates gasses that need to vented in order to further its growth wich is why we use a tyvek filter/polyfill filter to vent the gas.
