my first mono tub was a complete failure...
i tried using 3" of colonized WBS jars cased with 3/4" 50/50+ in a mono tub that was 73 qt. i set up the tub as per tek specks. 8 holes. the 4 bottom ones resting on the 5" mark. stuffed with poly-fill. filled. taped lid in place. set to incubate in warm undisturbed closet. 4 days later i had to reposition tub. doing so pulled loose one of the poly-fill plugs, and i did not notice it for 2 days. replaced plug, and 4 days later there is fuzzy, see through , white, fluffy stuff growing on top in the corner. i remover contam with spoon under as clean conditions as i could create, and patched, and resealed. nope... white stuff came back. this time i decide to remove the entire corner, and patch. i get in, and cut my corner out with a spatula. when i scoop out some falls back in the hole i left behind. here is the shit part. in that hole was about 1/2" of water. that water was now contaminated with white stuff. decontamination was no longer possible. that and the hole thing reeked. even without the contam i still had in too much water. oh well better luck next time. cant get any worse

I used 9"x12" hanging file folder-shaped boxes (see grow link) for my setup because I could fill three of them with one afternoon's PC run (nine 1 pt jars). That way if I have contams I lose 1/3rd of my grow.
Good luck on your next attempt. If it makes you feel any better, I failed twice (no growth whatsoever) before I managed this.

That's sad to hear my friend. I love monotubs and will NEVER switch back. We all have a weird sterilization issue sometimes.
I wouldn't say its the monotubs's fault though.

im not really hung up on the contam. i think the hole thing would have failed because of WAY too much water anyway. as a matter of fact if it weren't for the contam i would have spent the next month or so stressing out as to what i was doing wrong. now i know, and i can start over. i do plan to incorporate a flow hood, and hepa filter in a small closet before i do my next mono tub. ill also use a small heater and use the same room to incubate. the mono tub really seems to be the way to go, and i wont stop until i get it right. ill be starting some new LCs in the next day or two. then ill inoculate some large spawn bags. by the time the bags are ready to case my closet should be ready to go.

the white stringy stuff sounds like cobweb.
could have just sprayed it with peroxide instead of scooping it out.
if it was trich, you were doomed as you thought.
monotubs are my favorite fruiting chamber by far. if you have the space for them, they are great.
I suggest to you to do like four very small ones. get like 20qt ones that are the same size as the 12qt, just taller.
once you get more familiar with the procedure, move up in size.
you'll have to experiment with size and holes and what-not, but you'll get it.
if you pm-me, I'll give you my monotub dimensions and the hole dimensions. I got it down now.
don't give up on the monotub.

Monotubs are the best!

I don't bother with the holes. they seem to be fine if you fan twice a day.

why I like monotubs: no fanning required no air pumps no.... anything.
that is the point of a monotub in my opinion. fill it and forget it.

I don't like to drill holes in the side of the containers because I work with about 14 at a time and I like to reuse the bins. I take the time to fan in the morning when I wake up and before I go to sleep at night. I can check on the progress then as well. even if you forget to fan, it's no problem really; shroomies are resilient.
