i have been enjoying these mushrooms all season but am unsure of the species as they are very different to the usual varieties around the auckland area. these mushrooms are the largest ones i have seen with some stalks 18cm above ground with 10cm diameter caps! 2 of these giants gave 3 of us the full spectrum. found in last years wood mulch. spore print is purplish brown. stem is hollow.

If the picture in your avatar represents the mushroom you are trying to identify, I would say they may be P. Aucklandii due to dark colour and the wavy caps of the specimens presented in the picture.
At the same time 18cm and 10cm is rediculously large for any kind of New Zealand psilocybe I have ever come across. More pictures would be nice, especially ones with an object (lighter/ruler) to compare their size with.

well those look like subs to me. kindof odd way more bumpy on the cap and differnt shaped cap than any subs i have definatly found but im pretty sure thats what they are. the species does seem to have a wide range in its looks i have found patches with completely perfect caps with no waves/bumps whatsoever and then other patches with waves all over em. same goes for stalk lengths and such. as for the size, i think subs can get to that size when fully mature and healthy... i know ive found some pretty fuckin large ones before.
all of your pics look very much like subs to me except that one in your avataar.... those mushrooms look extremely odd but if its the same type then i think its just a deformed/mutant mushroom. cool find though. what area of auckland you find these bad boys in?

Those are fucken massive subs - they do look a bit unusual to me, that weird flower-like edge wavyness. Quite odd specimens.
