base substances instead of flours?

Does anyone have any experience in using base substances with vermiculite as a cake? I have read about the Spawn Mate and other supplements, but has anyone had any success with using something similar as your primary source of nutrient? Or has this just been deemed not worthwhile (expensive and time consuming) from experimentation long ago? Thanks in advance for any info
