    #5807944 - 06/30/06 10:41 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

will a ph of 6.5 be too acidic on my casing layer be too acidic? peat/verm 50/50.

i just went to the department store and couldn't find the hydrated lime or calcium carbonate, and i plan on casing a cake tonight...

Isn't the optimal 7, if so .5 will not make that big of a deference.

guess i got some decent peat moss then... must be free range or shade grown :P

nah, i've just heard that peat is highly acidic and needs a ph buffer of some sort... just was wondering how much it'll affect the future pinset

The mycelium doesn't really care. They will pin in an acidic environment. We adjust ph for mold control. Green molds such as trichoderma are favored by low ph conditions, while mushroom mycelium is highly tolerant of ph values up to around 8 to 8.5.

So true. Myc grows through peat casings and does not colonize for digestion two completely different characteristics. I have seen personally 1-2 nice flushes come from straight peat casings with no buffers at all. All that aside I prefer putting out the welcome mat for my little buddy's (adjust pH).
