Waiting on Casing

GODDAMMIT alright i started off using 1pint jars which i found out aren't reccommended because the bottom of the jar dries up and the mycelium won't cover the whole cake... alright well i cased these little fuckers with perlite and a casing mix i bought from mushbox. i put these guys back into my incubator while i made my fruiting chamber. they looked GOOD to me with mycelial growth all over the top. i started reading some opinions online and read something about OVERLAY. i got scared at that point and covered the shit with more casing mix. I keep these guys at like 70deg. and 90%+ humidity... I've thrown 1/2 the casings in the fridge overnight to experiment on whether that does anything. It's been 2 weeks since I've cased these fuckers and besides vegatative growth (casing pulls away from the sides)i've seen nothing. And like I said I just added casing mix to the sides... maybe I haven't watered the actual casing enough? I've tried to mist just the air and the sides of the FC to keep high humidity... and now I got too many people waiting on these bad boys... not to mention me. ANY AND ALL HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED THANK YOU

When you added more casing and put your casing in the fridge, you set the process back some. Your watering technique sounds fine--indirect misting works, especially if you had the casing mix at field capacity from the get-go. Overlay is pretty obvious, and there are good pics of it posted on this site. You only want to add more casing mix to maybe fill in the first patches of mycelium peeking through the casing layer. Hopefully it will pin soon. GL.

thanks, it's nice to hear some feedback i forgot to mention in the last post how much of a piece of shit those electronic misters are... anyway i took my hand-pump sprayer and sprayed the crap out of the casings... next day mycelium is back on top, spreading nicely through the new top layer. im using this blue-light i bought at petsmart that's supposed to do a good job imitating the sun. i also bought a moon-glow bulb that i'm curious about, but haven't used- i've been leaving the light on almost all day and the light is 60W so i should be doing a good job with that part. but may try fluorescent next. if these casings don't do something within like 2 weeks i'm going to probably just use the cake method with my next batch of jars that are ranging from done to should-be-done-in-a-week. NOTE:will post pictures next post... including terrarium set-ups and a cobweb mold pic in a jar that's better than any of those i've seen any where by the way im using costa rica and malabar in my casings now... soon to have puerto rican and b+ on the way

You added perlite to your casing?
You don't want to use perlite in your casing. I hope you mean you placed it under your substrate, I've seen some people do this but it's not needed IMO.
Also. Adding too much casing mix to an overly colonized casing layer has not been very beneficial to me. Best thing for a casing is to watch it closely and wait until you first see mycelium popping up. Then you initiate pinning immediately. You also need to be carefull you aren't misting your casings to heavly. I hope you have read hyphae's pinning strategy. If you haven't the link is within the link in my sig.

i guess my original statement is a little vague... no i used perlite under my colonized substrate to promote a higher humidity... and that's all i'm using in a poormans casing tek im doing. as far as watering(misting) goes for the first like week and a half i pretty much avoided directly putting the mister to the casing, i would spray the sides of my terrarium, all around the air, and the perlite at the bottom. now since i had added more casing mix to the top nothing had happened until the other day when i sprayed the crap out of the little bastard (directly on top of the casing) and now i have growth on top again my real problem has been this pinning stage. i make sure my temp is 70 degrees, my humidity is around 90% and i've been leaving my 60W Daylight Blue reptile bulb (i quote from the box: "provides full spectrum daylight") on almost all day. My guess is that my pinheads should pop up anyday but when you put all this time into something it's easy to get worried when you're not seeing anything truly change anymore. Like i promised pictures will be posted here early next week.
