Cloning with peroxide
    #5806068 - 06/30/06 05:48 AM (17 years, 10 months ago)

I've searched through lots of old posts yet haven't been able to find a satisfactory answer to this question, so here goes.

A friend of a friend (FOAF) has had quite a yield with the martha stewart tek - he's been using an ultrasonic humidifier hooked up to an automatic humidistat that turns the humidifer on and off , keeping the humidity exactly where he wants it. He tells me that the automatic humidistat is so hugely worth the investment that everyone should use one. But that is off topic.

The real issue is, my friend is interested in cloning, but doesn't have a glovebox and would like to avoid making one if he can. He has been thinking about just taking one of the nicest freshly picked shrooms and blending it up in water with a reasonably high concentration of H2O2, then sucking the slurry up in syringes and injecting it. As he understands it, peroxide kills bacteria and spores, so any bacteria or mold spores that would be in the water or slurry would not be a problem.

He's planning on trying it on one substrate bag anyway, probably, but he wanted me to ask on this board (where he says he learned most everything he knows five or six years ago) whether he's likely to be wasting his time.

Thanks!

Yes cloning with peroxide works great and is the way I prefer. BTW 3% is what I've used right out of the bottle.

thank you tons for the quick response!

So just to be sure - if my FOAF just plunks a freshly picked fruitbody into a blender and pours in straight 3% peroxide, blends it all up, and sucks it up into a clean (maybe sterilized, but maybe not if that isn't necessary) syringe - when he injects his bags, he won't end up with serious contamination?

It seems like it should work, everything I know and he knows about working with peroxide suggests that this should work - it just seems too easy (no sterilization of anything) and too good to be true

Thanks again!

also he wanted me to ask if this would work with a recently, completely dry mushroom, or with one that is mostly dry.

What the rules are for reviving dried mushrooms are a mystery to my friend!

thats how I did my cloning....wouldn't do it any other way cause it works perfect(I just soak the piece of shroom in a lil bowl of peroxide then plop in in some lm with tweazers) u also get some peroxide into the substrate that way which also helps to keep things sterile

I wouldn't recommend using a wet shroom! I've had contams that way actually...dry shroom soaks up the peroxide better
