well if they turn black its almost positive its Blossom End Rot (BER). BER has a lot of causes. I think it is a lack of calcium, which can be exacerbated by over watering. Any garden center should carry some foliar spray that should help correct the problem in 10-14 days.
I over-watered real bad last year, and ended up with BER for most of the summer. IT sucked. and for that reason I added mulch (coco Coir) and have only watered 2 times all year. My Maters are 5' tall now, and have more blooms that I ever thought possible.

I'm already harvesting the first round of my tomatoes, I have over 5 varieties of red and yellow tomatoes.
However, I am having some kind of disease, or bacteria on some of my red tomatoes. The whole tomato ripens up red, except there Will be blotchy yellowish/range spots on some part of the tomato. When you cut it open, these blotchy spots lead to whitish veins, that appear to be eating and destroying the tomato . Does anyone know what this is?
However despite loosing some bomb ass tomatoes to whatever this disease is, I can say that I have harvested some of the best tasting tomatos this year, and my new personal favorite is a cherry champaign yellow tomato. Sooooooooo goood.
Here are some two week old pictures, I have many more, much larger, and much nicer looking ones now, just starting to ripen.

I don't see any problems with those maters. Other than there not ripe! But what you describe sounds like what ROD was talking about, bacteria cankers.

Sorry I thought I had mentioned those in the picture were not the ones with problems. Those were two week old photos, but right now those very same maters are turning red, and some have the problem.
As far as I know, I'm pretty sure it's not cankers. But thanks anyways. It doesn't matter if I loose a few, I've harvested enough good ones to make it worthwhile, however I am still baffled.

Has anyone ever used dog food in the winter to add nutrients to their tomato area? I went to visit a relative in south texas and his neighbor had these huge awesome tasting tomatoes. I asked him his secret and he said he tills a bag dog food into the soil.
