poor dying bunny in a box
    #5804930 - 06/29/06 10:43 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

I went over to my friends house earler today to go get her and go to china town and chill on lake michigan for a bit. nothing romantic or anyhting just an old friend.

anyways as i get to her door , what do i see but her cat, standing over a poor baby bunny. Its back legs were not moving but its front ones were... it was pretty messed up, but not bleeding and still breathing heavily...

so we put it in a box on the side of the house with some grass and lettuce and some milk in a saucer and went to the city hoping that it would get better.

when we got back about a half hour ago, it was still alive, but barely able to open its eyes....

i dropped her off and took the buny back home with me.

its sitting there... probably in horrible pain, mostlikely dying.
I dont know what to do except wait it out
there are those that say killing it would be the way to go.. but i couldnt ever do it.
its pretty sad :frown: i wish i could do more, but there really isnt any more that i can do

Euthanize it man. The thing is suffering. They usually gas animals that are suffering. They normally use CO2 to gas them. If you can rig some apparatus where you can collect the gas from baking soda + vinegar gasses to flow into the bunnies house, I'd do that.

When I have to euthanize animals I'll either shoot them or CO2 them (I have a 20lb tank of CO2 for my planted tank). With cold blooded animals, I'll stick them in the freezer. Rabbits are warm blooded though, don't do that.

I dunno what to say, part of me says you should smash its face in with a brick, but the better part of me says to do whatever it takes to keep it from dying.

Vet?

If i were you i would probably be giving it all kinds of food and milk and shit. let his final meal be a feast he's only dreamed of

It's suffering man. If you were paralyzed and were in imense pain, wouldn't you want someone to put you out of your misery?

Sure, it's sad, but it's for the better. I think most beings would rather die quickly then suffer an awfully painful and slow death. You gotta do what needs to be done.

Propane would work, that'd be the most humane. N2O would probably be cruel. I wouldn't want to trip before I die.

Please put it down. I once went to a mans house(friend of the family) and he had a lot of rabbits. I mean an obscene amount.
I was very young at the time and he told us(my sisters and I) that he was going to make dinner with one of them. He grabbed one of the rabbits out of one of the cages and held it upside down. Then with a hammer he whacked the bunny in the head a couple of times. It was one of the worst things I ever had to see.

Poor things. If I ever had to put an animal down...it would be in the most gentle way as possible.

The best way is to deliver some Euthanylâ„¢ (Pentobarbitol sodium) directly into the heart muscle with a large-gage cardiac needle...

That's how I want to be put to sleep...

Quick story,
I found this one on the side of the road in the middle of winter in frozen mud,

It was not moving and it's rear end look messed up,

I took it immediately to the vet, it had a broken pelvis,

Long store short he is still with us, and yeah it cost more then I would have liked but hey,

So please do one of the two,

Seriously?

If I was unbearable pain and there was nothing that could be done besides death itself. I'd pray that someone would let me go.

Of course, you don't know for sure how serious the injuries are, but regardless, it's barely moving as you stated.
Bring it to me. Take it to a vet. You have a few choices.

That's a good idea. I would suggest not trying to put it off though. As incomfortable as it makes you, you know you need to do what is right. Or at least, what's best.

how can you judge what is best for another living thing? It may seem like its going to die, but will it? if it wasnt going to and i killed it, would that be right?

i dont fucking understand how people (life) can have such a dinity of death, and find it horribly wrong to kill another human

yet find it perfectly fine to kill another animal (life) or any other living creature.

Why is it dignified to allow a loved one in your family to die a painful slow death, yet totally apropriate to kill a loved animal at the onset of a bad disease?

its all life.

and yes i spent a good portion of my day watching my grandmother in isolation in the ICU recovering from god knows what related to chemotherapy and her cancer.

so should i go finish off the bunny, load both barrels and go head back down to the hospital beacuse believe me grandma is suffering, and life is life.

Well, if you literally CAN'T kill it yourself, then take it out into the country/woods and let it die out there as opposed in a box in your room. Either that or take it to a vet, or read up on the net for any helpful info on reviving it.

in the woods out here it will be ripped to shreads by another animal, cat, dog or coyote. I think that letting it have a warm place to possibly live through the night is somthing better than that.

i'd say put it out of it's misery, but that's not an easy thing to do. i've never had to do it personally, but a few weeks ago my sister had to snap one of our most beloved rabbit's neck because he got into rat poison. it's not easy, but it's the best thing to do. not everyone can do it though, my sister said she never wants to have to do something like that again.

Well, you said yourself that it's breathing heavily and can't move. I'm not TRYING to judge anything. I'm sure it came out looking that way. I apologize. Still though, IMO, I think it's cruel to allow an animal to endure the kinda pain I can only imagine it's in.

I'm definately not saying "go blow it's head off, or run the thing over."

I only meant that you have put yourself in a predicament that you aren't sure how to handle. I know what I would do.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

well i called the 24 hour vets in the area, and basically after calling everyone (not too many people at this hour) they told me that if it made it the night, there are some rehabbers in the area that deal with this sort of thing.

he told me make him comfortable and say prayers.

he had me go look at the rabit for a white mark on his head, and while i did this i noticed that he was more responsive than he was a bit earlier, so there is still some hope.

the animal hospital across the street opens in the morning, so god willing hell make it that long.

yours probably isn't bleeding through its mouth and nose though and bleeding internally from poison. there was no saving my bunny, he was suffering badly, seizuring and stuff. it was very hard to watch, because i was very attached to him.

yeah poison would be a different story.
i must say that my first reaction was to blow its brains out.... and had in been in a state where i would have been armed i might have done it.

dont get me wrong i do advocate killing in some situations. like me and a pisssssed off rattle snake 30 miles from town, yeah... im going to try and back away, but if that motherfucker comes at me, i will shoot it in the fucking head.

or if someone is threatening me or others with serious bodily harm or death... yep id kill em, or atleast shoot em so that they cant hurt anyone...

but somthing that has a chance of living, well i think that it deserves the chance.
if i were in that situation i dont think that i would want to be put down..... i dont think that i could even do it myself to be honest...
