well after tons of problems with my LC's I got some jars going then did G2G with. The Jars have a 1 inch polyfil breather hole. All the quart jars colonized fully. The 6 half gallons on the other hand have half colonized and stalled even with shaking. Why is it that 1/2 gallons do not want to colonize. If the WBS was the same in the 1/2 gallons as the qts? its been 2+ weeks for colonization. 1/2 gallons shaken after 5 days and today. They are in a TIT at 83F or something. There is no apparent fermentation smell and they do not look too dry. Just large clumps of colonization and stalling.

No two inch hole would just lead to the jar drying out. There is some vermiculite in the WBS because I was in a hurry to get it strained but that doesnt explain it. I would guess the 1/2 gallons were 2/5 colonized with a g2g. That means it did take off to some extent. I do not think its a contam though, but since I bought these 1/2 gallons I have yet to get one to colonize. Stamets colonizes them all day long with a 1/2 hole.

I've never seen 1/2 gallon jars at fungi perfecti, other than on their website for sale. They used to use 1 gallon, but they were incubated at a 45 degree angle to allow for gas exchange. 1/2 gallon jars bite in my opinion. The failure ratio I experienced was completely unacceptable due to anerobic conditions in the center of the jars. You'll run into the same problem with 1 gallon unless you build angled shelves. Personally, for home growers, 1 quart or 1 liter jars work best. RR
