Books that explain it all
    #5804136 - 06/29/06 05:50 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

Everyone here is at various stages of the formation of a philosophy on life. I don't believe in any nameable philosophies or ideologies, but I have 'word-concepts' for 'abstract' concepts that I intuit to be True in the most universal sense. Words themselves do not hold universal truth, but they can be metaphors for it.

My question is simple, but think hard: If you could choose 5 books to give to someone that explain it all, what would they be?

My humble contribution:

The Baghavad Gita
Be Here Now by Ram Dass
The Holotropic Mind by Stanislav Grof
Food of the Gods by Terence McKenna
The Great Shark Hunt Vol. 1 by Hunter S. Thompson

What would your list look like?

This is a wonderful idea for a post.

Some personal suggestions:

The Book by Alan Watts
Paths to God by Ram Dass
Journey to Ixtlan by Carlos Castaneda
Be Here Now by Ram Dass
Siddhartha by Herman Hesse

All breathtaking, and life changing.

Great book on meditation and the relation of the mind and body:
"Dialogue with Death" by Eknath Easwaran

And for the struggling artist:
"Art and Fear" (can't think of the author's name off the top of my head...)

There are three sections to the book.

The first is an autiobiography of Ram Dass, which is really quite fascinating.

The second is the core, it is the real important text of Be Here Now, and you can find it online here:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...rue#Post5370401

The third is the cookbook for a sacred life, and has practices and more information on specific issues.

I have Easwaran's translation of the Gita.  Straightforward, solid translation, and he seems like a pretty smart guy judging by the preface.

I know someone posted the famous "brown pages" of Be Here Now in this forum a few months ago; perhaps a search would bring up the thread.  Otherwise, you'll find it on amazon.com or any other major online bookseller -- not free, but hey, I think you might find it's worth the loot!

Yes Eknath is brilliant. He doesn't tip toe around what he is trying to say by filling it with poetic BS. He just gets right to it; it's nice.

I like this post, the only deep book I ever read was:
Celestine Prophecy By James Redfield
It's worth the read, that I am sure.

I would remove the bush book. Just seem worthy to have in there with all those others. He is one man. He is a douche bag, and that is all there is to that.

Im guessing you have not read that book.  It's a biography written by a critic, but goes heavily into many taboo subjects, providing a deep insight into the mind of a family that is bent on ruling the most powerful nation for many years to come.

also, if i had to pick one book, I would suggest the Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz.

it was my introduction to multi-dimensional thinking
