LOOKS MUCH LIKE AN INCADECENT BULB. which will do little more than heat a room and make it glow.
you need compact florescents or just stright florescent long bulb lights.
about 100 watts should get you going a little ways.
if you going to have more than 2 -4 plants go for LONG bulbs like shop lights.

What he said ^
Incandescent bulbs have very low lumen output for the amount of wattage input, and their spectrum just ain't right for plants.
If you must use common light fixtures for plants, go with flourescents. With compact floros (the ones that are coiled to have a shape and size similar to a bulb) place them in a good reflector and use many of them. For long straight floros, also get a fixture with a reflector, and one that uses TWO tubes in it, the output per area is better.
The "cool white" flourescents have a spectrum around and including blue, whereas the "warm white" or just "warm" flourescents have the red area. Using one of each in a fixture is something I've seen being recommended to offer a fuller spectrum.
Or you could just buy floros designed for plants, nice spectrum on them.
Floros also have the advantage of not getting very hot at all, which allows you to place the bulbs very close to the plants. Do so, place them very close to the plants to minimize wasted light.
I don't actually have much experience here, I'm just regurgitating info.

Im thinking Im going to go ahead and buy the 2 reptile ones and the amber, red, and crystal Aqua ones, and hook them into Goose Neck lamps or any lamp forreal, and set them up all around 1 plant and try it out see how fast it germinates, how quickly it developes sets, how fat the stem gets, ect. jsut study how it grows with these lights

Trust me man, I'm sitting 2 feet away from my aquarium, and I've used those incandescent bulbs in my tank. They're not much good for plants. I had aquatic plants in my tank, and they barely managed to stay alive under those lights. And they may have been subsisting on the sunlight that enters my room, not the light from the bulbs.
Flourescent lights are not expensive. A decent 24" two-bulb long-style flourescent unit with ballast, reflector, and a couple bulbs would cost me less than $35 at my local ACE hardware.
And, add that to the fact that you wind up using less power than with the incandescents, and yet still getting more light. You save money indefinitely from the lower wattage.
*edit* Oh, and for your sake don't bother using any infrared bulbs... do you know what IR bulbs are? Heat lamps, the things they use to keep fries hot at McDonald's. IR isn't really useful in photosynthesis, all it would wind up doing is making the plants and soil underneath it hot.

yeah. A lot of people have been doing this a LONG time. If you don't want to get the fluorescent tubes and the fixture, just get some compact fluorescents. This is what people who grow all kinds of plants use and recommend - because it works.

New Hydro System Questions [Re: Magash]

alright thanks guys, Fuck that, now im off to my new hydro system, i now have a 20 gallon tub and im making 6 holes in it and putting 6 cups instead of 1. Also my hydro system i made a few days ago on the 26th, i put some tomatoe cutitng in there the 27th and now todya the 29th i have HUGE root system.
I HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT AIRSTONE THOUGH: Im wondering will too much oxygen hurt it, im having 6 plants so im wanting to hook up 4, 4"x1" air stones but just running on 1 air pump, or 6, 4"x1" air stone running on 2 air pumps, would this be too much oxygen or does it matter, because now that im not using .5-1.0 gallons of water but instead 20 gallons, i figure ill need more oxygen

I seem to remember someone suggesting two pumps for a setup of that kind of size, but I'll let someone more experienced give you a better answer

Just go to the hardware store and buy a 70w hps street lamp for $50. Trust me, HPS is the only thing suitable unless you are are just sprouting seedlings.

If you have a home depot or lowes then they do carry them. Look in lighting, look for security lights/flood lights, etc. in there will be a mini streetlight for $50
The only choices are the sun or HPS, or shitty subpar buds.

I'm kind of wondering if he knows he needs ballast with those bulbs.

hehe thats what i was thinking.
calab: those prices are for JUST the bulbs. you will need a ballast to use them.

Hahahahahahahaha, I was just about to tell him that I think those are actually just the prices for the bulbs. I looked on lowes.com and then I figured out what was really going on here. They do have the 70w and 150w hps streetlamps though.
