Asking to get time off work
#5803227 - 06/29/06 01:04 PM (17 years, 7 months ago) |

I just took ten days off (am nearing the end of this vacation now) and am going to ask for 3 days in August, and then in November. Then possibly a week in January. Is my manager going to hate me? Should I just quit now? If I can afford to travel, why shouldn't I?

Can't hurt to talk it over with him/her.

Does it seem like I'm asking for excessive time off?

3 in november after ten in June does seem excessive...but then again 3 isn't so much as 10.

Just ask for the time off. I doubt that, in the future, you'll look back and say "I'm so glad I stayed at work instead of travelling!". I've quit numerous jobs because they wouldn't give me time off.

Yeah, that's my fear. I'm sure she'll think it's excessive, but my life is not dedicated to dog grooming. It's dedicated to the people in my life that I care for, and good times. Hopefully I can explain that to her.

I know you're so right. I just feel the pressure of the corporation I work for breathing down my neck, "HOURS! MORE HOURS, HOURS! WORK, WORK WORK!"

Ask them how many weeks of vacation their CEO/CFO gets, then ask why he isn't putting in overtime.

I could also make up for those days I am taking off by sacrificing my regular two days off each week.

Oh you should just do that! Work a few of your normal days off...that's the easiest, best solution.

way too much time off IMO
unless you have a set vacation structure w/ x amount of days you can use with proper notice
I'd sit you down and talk to you, or just deny some of your requests

Is it reasonable to work my regular days off for two weeks if I was going to get three days at the end of the long week?

It has been my experience that it is far better to hit the boss with as many dates and as much notice as possible.
I can generally outline what days I need off 6 months ahead of time, so, I try to to ask off only twice a year. I have never been denied and I've thrown some doozies out there. Heck, coming up in November I will be out of town for 3 weekends in a row.
Oh, yeah, i think attitude carries it a long way. I just walk into the man's office and straight over to his calendar and say, "I am going to need to take these days off", as I start writing on his calendar. I always offer to give 2 week and 1 week notices prior so there are no suprises.

i'm guessing it depends on the sort of structure your coworkers and you interact in... won't someone have to cover for you? wouldn't working your days off mean someone alse would be unneccery?

You just gave me an idea for my jobhunting... there's a petsmart near my home.
I wash my cat, and do a decent job (and washing a cat is a very hard thing to do)... I should see if the petsmart has openings.
About your job, if you're worried you may be asking for too much time off, just ask your manager if they feel you are asking too much. Explain why you feel compelled to do so. They'll either agree or disagree, but you'll have a certain answer.

Petsmart will likely have you begin has a bather. Then after you're good at doing that they'll send you to grooming academy. Bathers make around 7 dollars an hour where I live. Groomers make commission, generally 3-5x what bathers make depending on how good/fast you are. After the academy you do 100 dogs for petsmart and then you go on commission.
It's an entertaining job and just takes skill.

as said, this could be reasonable if discussed up front and with plenty of notice

I say do whatever you feel like doing. Putting my shoulder to the wheel of some meaningless profit machine is not something I feel proud to prioritize over my desire to travel or do what I want to do.
