slow colinization with WBS
    #5801432 - 06/28/06 11:49 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

for some reason my friends WBS jars take forever... he was wondering if this is common or if they usually go faster and the proccess he makes the jars (instead of soaking the seeds he pressure cooks them with water an inch below the seed line) is wrong? he still gets nice plump seeds with what looks like good moisture level but like i said the colonization is a lot slower... his regular BRF cakes go much faster and he is wondering whats the point of WBS if it takes longer, and in the wrong run isnt as nutrient rich as BRF... mabye you save a CC or 2 but he grows a lot and has plenty of spores to make syringes with so thats not much of a problem..

towards the end of colonization he also loosens the cap to allow more air exchange rather than rely on the tyvek/polyfill that dont allow as much air exchange... but even that doesnt help that much...

another question: where does one buy millet? ive heard that was faster than WBS...

sounds like he's using three times as much water as he needs. tell him to soak the seeds for 12 hours, rinse them off real good and let them drain for a half hour or until they don't drip anymore. pressure cook as normal. he wouldn't have this problem with verm/brf because its foolproof.

Go to the store and look at the back of the wbs bags. some brands give details like the amount of seed and their types in the order from greatest to least. parakeet seed is straght millet but it might cost more. Peas

if anything he isnt using enough water, if there was too much youd be able to see it when i take em out and there is no water in them after he takes them out...

your WBS jars shouldn't take more than 2 weeks to fully colonize, at least pint size jars. my MS inoced jars are usly 100% in about 10 days with a few stragglers. heres some questions to ask your friend:

1. what are his incubating temps?
should be between 80-85 deg F.

2. dose he have some way to allow gas exchange?
IMO you need at least a 1/4" hole in the lid to allow proper gas exchange during incubation, and filter w/ polyfill or tyvek witch ever you prefer.

3. dose he shake his jars at all??
Ive shaken & not shaking my jars after inoculating them and it really makes no diff IMO. i just like to shake them after inoc to spread out the spores so myc. growth is more spread out, but thats just personal preference. then after 5-7 days later i will go down and shake them again to help spread the mycelium around. then i will go check them again on about day 10 after inoc. and see if they need shaken up again, usually they are done by then but if i have some straggler jars ill shake them up again.

tell him he needs to read up on some diff WBS tecs and try some diff ones then once hes tried a few diff ones he can take what he likes from them and make his own tec.

when i do mine if I'm in no hurry ill do a 24 hr soak (but its not needed). but if i don't feel like waiting i just rinse the WBS about 3-4 times till its clean then simmer till some of the bigger seeds start to split.

then strain the water off and spray it w/ cold water real good, this helps get the sticky starches off. i don't know if this really helps or not but i do it.

while the WBS is draining (drain time isn't important, its as long as it takes me to scoop out my verm) i put 1/4 cup verm per pint jar into my big pan then dump the WBS into the big pan and mix it all up real good by hand. you want the WBS to have extra water on it still to help moisten up the verm.

then i fill up my jars w/ the WBS/verm mix, put the lids on and cover w/ foil and PC for 45 min.

i like adding the verm to the mix for 2 reasons.. if for some reason you did get to much water into your jars it will absorb it.. and the other reason is i feel it helps provide moisture for the mycelium later on.

but thats my babble on WBS jars.. hope you get something useful out of it.. if you have any q's you can msg me..

l8r,
will

that's the first time i've heard of mixing vermiculite with WBS jars. Anyone else had any experience with this?

sure, its becoming highly recommended for people having problems with moisture content problems with grains.
some put the verm on the bottom layer, this guy mixes his.
