Are these Gymnopilus???
    #5800981 - 06/28/06 09:54 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

I'm not sure if the wood they were growing from was maple or alder. I'm sorry but I didn't get a spore print. The caps had a sticky transparent pellicle. Any help would be appreciated.

No!!  I really disagree.  The first pic is definitely not a gym, not even close.  Second pic is too blurry to tell, and the third and fourth look like they could be a pholiota since there seem to be bumps on the cap.  Longbottom, never make such a definitive ID on blurry pics and no description!  DaveTX, you know better than to post this kind of shit.  And I had just bumped your rating a shroom too...

I broke a stem in half and noticed no bruising from its original color. Should I have waited longer for the bruising occur, or do they usually bruise instantly?

Well, shit! My bad man. The first picture did look a little shady to me. But the 2nd and the 4th looked like gyms for sure. I'm a little new so I may be off of course.

No! Those are not Gyms. Do NOT eat them. I can't believe people congratulated on these finds.

People: if you don't know EXACTLY what the mushrooms are, which requies a spore print to identify, then SHUT UP. DO NOT GIVE FALSE IDs.

All I know is that when I went to peal the skin from the top caps is that it reminded of boogers that would stretch out and snap back like snail slime.

ShroominDole:
"an outer layer covering over the outside of the cap.......a pellicle which is filamentous and can gelatinize making the cap viscid ( slipperry or slimy when wet ) or even sticky or tacky once they start to dry slightly.......this outer skin (pellicle) can usually be (but not always so forthcoming) easily peeled back or seperable by grabbing the top outer edge (margin) of the cap and pinch and peel the skin up and off........... they often term this ' an easily seperable gelatinized pellical '."

Yes! Thats is exactly what I'm talking about! The pellicle is transparent and sticky.... First I grabbed ahold of the outer rim margin thing and began puling tell finally it riped off and flew mack at me!!!! I almost practically lost an eye during the proses. It was sticky and rolled up with a texture of booger.

"Gymnopilus" the name refers to the cell structure of the top of the cap. No member of the genus has a slimy cap. If you find and orange mushroom with a slimy cap, it is 100% without a doubt not Gymnopilus.

I think Dave thinks that anything with a pellicle is active. Dave, it is a characteristic of many Psilocybes to have a pellicle. So this fact tells you nothing about your non-gyms. Some gymnopilus might have a somewhat sticky cap, but it should not be slimy.

"Some gymnopilus might have a somewhat sticky cap"

I don't think so. Even when wet the caps are not sticky or slimy. It's characteristic of the genus.

My bad.  I was going by Roger's description of G. terrestris which he  said can have a slightly sticky cap.  But looking at the descriptions of every other species, it says smooth and dry for pretty much all of them.  Dry caps would appear to be a really good thing to keep in mind when looking at potential gyms.  Thanks for the knowledge Dan

Yea, when they were wet they were kinda slippery and slimy then sticky when they were dry. Also I checked the wood and it was slightly berried completely dead maple. Any how thanks for all the suggestions guys.
