would the sulfites in just a small amount of beer prevent the growth of mycellium in a liquid culture?
I figure, if i leave a half drank bottle of beer on the counter for a week, it'll sure as hell have mold in it, so why not? anyways, i've got several different "alternative" liquid cultures going at the moment, just wondered if the sulfites (preservatives) would slow things down or possibly stop them.

No, but the ethanol probably would.

uhhhh, i sterlized it... therefore i'd assume the ethanol would have evaporated.

I've read posts where people have added beer instead of brewers yeast.
You should be good to go as long as you are using it as an additive and not the whole enchilada.

yeah, i just used approx 20 ml in a half pint LC... 20 ml pabst blue ribbon, 50 ml coffee, 1 tsp karo and the rest tap water! i know ethanol wont be a problem, since the flash point of ethanol is extremely lower than water. and i boiled it for an hour, plenty of time to sterlize it.
i'll let you guys know how it turns out.

Back to Chem 101 for you! No matter how long you boil an ethanol/water mix you will not be able to get rid of the last 5% ethanol. Beer is only around 3-7% anyway so boiling or sterilizing it isn't really going to remove much, if any, of the ethanol.
Good luck with your experiment anyway. Maybe myc will tolerate 5% alcohol.

I've tried beer as an lc and also as an additive to grains. The alcohol inhibits growth, and doesn't boil out. RR

Why don't you try one with Non-Alcoholic Beer? Sounds like a good idea no?

What is Mold?
Molds are fungi that reproduce by releasing tiny spores into the air. Spores lucky enough to land on moist objects may begin to grow. There are thousands of different types of mold and we encounter many of them every day, inside and out.

RRoger that! Couldn't help myself.
Yeah, I had read of people using it as an additive. Never tried it myself. The non alcoholic beer sounds interesting but.. Well now that I think about it, using beer doesn't sound good in theory at all. *ASSUMPTION* Non-alcoholic beer is regular beer put through a chemical proccess to remove the alcohol.
Making beer is largely a proccess of turning more complex sugars into simpler sugars(very simplified here but stay with me). A byproduct of this transaction is CO2. To learn alot about the chemical proccess of making beer see: http://www.ceic.unsw.edu.au/research/special_features/Beer.pdf
An excellent article from a chemical engineering standpoint with a dash of understandable garbage thrown in here and there!
It stands to reason that a high CO2 level and lack of complex sugars alone could 'starve and suffocate' myc. This is based on the assumption that myc enjoys O2 and complex carbohydrates. Then we add in the alcohol factor on top of that and we have some serious ass reaming of our beloved myc. We're talking bound, gagged, and poisoned.
But this is all conjecture. RR already said what we need to know. I just thought I'd throw a few words out there in hopes of sparking up more conversation about it.

actually, it's not just beer... it's beer, water and karo... and it showed signs of growth in 24 hours... so it didn't slow it down all that much. although i'll have to say that the coffee karo water mix is doing a little better.
