Dunking
    #5799807 - 06/28/06 03:37 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

I have a few brf cakes that are ready to be birthed. I want to dunk them this time around to see if I get a better yield. Question is, How do I keep them submerged without damaging them? I have a 3 gallon bucket for the container with lid. Thanks.

I always just through a top on the container they were dunked in to keep them submerged... I'm sure you can figure something out. You really wont be risking any damage any way you go about it, unless your sticking a knife through it... which might not do that much damage either, heh.

Do they have to be fully submerged or can they just float on top? Also, what percentage of hydrogen peroxide do I add? Will 12 hours suffice?

fully submerged for best results.

I put a clean (as in wiped down with surgical spirits and rinsed with sterile water) plate on top of all the cakes. keeps them submerged nicely

12 hours for best results

put them in a closed container for 12 hours. when your time is up just flip them upside down for another 12.

Will hydrogen peroxide work as a "sterile spirit"? If so, like 10 percent maybe?

H2O2 isn't really needed... but certainly doesn't hurt.  use 1:10 H2O2 (standard 3% stuff) to H2O.

an even easier way to dunk for future reference is get yourself another set of lids ($2) this way there's no holes punched in them.  scrape out your verm layer when birthing, fill jar with water, and put a normal lid on to hold the cake down and keep it sealed... the cake will float as you fill, so add a little extra water so that some pours out when you force the cake down with the lid and you end up with the jar totally full and cake submerged.  quick, easy and clean.  and you can observe before and after how much water the cake soaked in

I put a small bowl into a zip-lock bag and set it on top of the cake, to make it submerged.
