 Saudi police 'stopped' fire rescue

BBC Reports:
Saudi Arabia's religious police stopped schoolgirls from leaving a blazing building because they were not wearing correct Islamic dress, according to Saudi newspapers.
In a rare criticism of the kingdom's powerful "mutaween" police, the Saudi media has accused them of hindering attempts to save 15 girls who died in the fire on Monday.
About 800 pupils were inside the school in the holy city of Mecca when the tragedy occurred.
15 girls died in the blaze and more than 50 others were injured
According to the al-Eqtisadiah daily, firemen confronted police after they tried to keep the girls inside because they were not wearing the headscarves and abayas (black robes) required by the kingdom's strict interpretation of Islam.
One witness said he saw three policemen "beating young girls to prevent them from leaving the school because they were not wearing the abaya".
The Saudi Gazette quoted witnesses as saying that the police - known as the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice - had stopped men who tried to help the girls and warned "it is a sinful to approach them".
The father of one of the dead girls said that the school watchman even refused to open the gates to let the girls out.
"Lives could have been saved had they not been stopped by members of the Commission for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice," the newspaper concluded.
Relatives' anger
Families of the victims have been incensed over the deaths.
Most of the victims were crushed in a stampede as they tried to flee the blaze.
The school was locked at the time of the fire - a usual practice to ensure full segregation of the sexes.
The religious police are widely feared in Saudi Arabia. They roam the streets enforcing dress codes and sex segregation, and ensuring prayers are performed on time.
Those who refuse to obey their orders are often beaten and sometimes put in jail.

It's right up there with Israeli forces shooting and blowing up Palestinian ambulances
trying to speed wounded children to the hospital for treatment.

Yea, all of them are fucked up. To me, the US backing anyone there is like
the cops giving guns and money to the Crips or the Bloods in South Central
Los Angeles.

This morning (3/21) another Palestinian ambulance was caught shuttling a suicide bomber through checkpoints. They have ruined the neutrality of their own ambulances.
I am not allowed to fire upon medical personell or vehicles, but that assumes they are unarmed. The instant they pick up a weapon I can open fire, and be completely justified by the Geneva Convention. If I have reason to believe that an ambulance is carrying a bomber, I will damn sure shoot at it, and live with the consequences if I am wrong.
BTW, if moving back to pre-67 borders will bring peace, then why was Israel attacked in 1967? The only reason they are saddled with Palestinian territories is the 1967 war. Other Arab countries exacerbate the situation because it is a great way to deflect attention from their own corruption and brutality.
The people I met while in the middle east were individually great, friendly people. As a group, however, they are completely in denial about their societies failures, and they need a scapegoat. The average Arab on the street believes completely nutball conspiracy theories that put our own American 'black helicopter' types to shame. Their governments and media encourage this to keep a hold on power, and dissenters either die or come live in the west. Arab society is doomed to stagnation and failure until they can honestly appraise themselves.
Do Israelis do some fucked up things? Yes, of course. There could have been peace from 1948 onward, though, if they had not constantly been attacked by their neighbors, or if their neighbors had taken them up on their many offers, some identical to the current Saudi plan. The average Israeli wants to settle this. The average illiterate Arab wants to settle this by killing or driving out every last Jew in the middle east. Try reading some Arab/Palestinian press that has not been released expressly for westerners. They only want peace of it is via complete victory.
