Hello. I found your board while researching a few mushrooms that grew in my back yard in the past 24 hours. We've had massive rain here in Northern VA! I have a friend/expert who can identify them for me tomorrow, but I'm anxious to find out what they are. Someone on a non mushroom board told me they think it's pleurotus djamor (pink oyster). Here's a pic (I hope I post this right). I was afraid that critters would eat them, so I dug up the two big ones (looks like one in the pic, but it's two). I left a much smaller one out there, in hope of it growing. Any help in identity would be much appreciated! Thanks!

I think you've got it, Anno.
PapaBear, be sure to check the underside of the caps. A Pleurotus should have obvious decurrent gills. A Grifola will have lots of tiny tubes (pores) instead of gills.
Happy mushrooming!

Sure does look like the hen of the woods, lots have been popping up with these rains. The one's I've seen in the southeast are typically growing within several feet of an oak tree. A lot of grocery stores sell these mushrooms nowadays. You can maybe find one to compare yours with.

If where it is bruised stains black it is Black Staining Polypore .Meripilus_giganteus is sometimes identical in appearance to Grifola frondosa.

falcon is right on with the recommendation to look for a staining reaction. Based on the photo it really could go either way imo... check the tubes... 1 - 3 pores per mm with Grifola frondosa. Meripilus giganteus tends to have slightly smaller pores around 3 - 7ish per mm. Check for staining as this is easily seen on the tube region of Meripilus.
Grifola frondosa is a wonderful and supposedly potent medicinal mushroom however some people have a gastric reaction after consuming it.
One of my favorites, more so than morel even... I’m jealous as a matter of fact.

My quess here would be Bondarzewia berkeleyi (Berkeley's Polypore}. Looks too substantive to be Grifola frondosa and with the wrong coloring.
