Coprinus are commonly found in hay, those do look quite strange and different form any of the hay coprinus species that I find.
Very long caps. Interesting.
Try and get a print and see if the gills turn to a inky substance as they age.

Well, that sounds consistent with the coprinus genus.

Most Coprinus species are not of any edible interest. Some are poisonous if mixed with alcohol. None are known to be active. One species C. comatus is a choice edible - yours do not look anything close to it, so I would not advise eating it for any reason.

That is pretty common... sometimes I see ones on hay that just look like a stem and that's it.

Notice the ones on the right, in this picture that I took...

Hehehe, the "ink" description is a dead give away...  Yeah, I'm with ya Eris, at my school I'll be walking through woodchips (I get the weirdest looks :frown: ) and see all these little white flimsy stalks poking out, and sure enough, if I go up close I can find gooey remnants of the cap on the tip of the stem.  I generally keep my eyes out for them, as an indicator for other species, as coprinus are often abundant and easy to spot.
On hunts, despite my better judgement, I'll be tempted by the pretty sparkly looking brown caps of C. micaceus, and pick them and throw a couple in my bag.... BAD idea.  I can never resist!!
