Oyster & FAE
    #5794929 - 06/27/06 05:00 AM (17 years, 7 months ago)

Whats happening everyone?

OK, this is my third oyster grow and I'm still having FAE issues.
I have a single tub setup with about 1.5 inches of perlite in the bottom and a small fan running on low about 6 feet from the tub pointed indirectly at it.

I'm getting mediocre fruits, by that I mean there still long and tubular as opposed to the classic oyster shape. I did however end up with enough to get a couple of servings off my last flush, but I dont consider it a trully succesful grow yet.

I think the real trick is balancing the humidity while still providing ample amount of FAE. Any suggestions from the good people on here is always appreciated.
Thanks, Gobbs.

I have light on about 12 hours a day, but its a regular 60 watt light on the ceiling, not a fluorescent.

Lighting is VERY important with oyster IMO... I have noticed that with indirect sunlight, they grow the BEST. 60 watt light is not very good

I have only experimented with oysters once (P. Ostreatus). From that experiment I noticed that light intensity is important as well as having good air exchange...i.e. CO2/O2. You might be having an xs CO2 build up in your grow chamber.

PS - been out of the OMC loop for awhile, but I am guessing FAE means "fresh air exchange"

The ones I grew were inside a clear storage tote (wet perlite for humidity) that got indirect sunlight from a window. I would air it out 2-3 times a day by taking the lid off and giving it a quick 1-2 second fan using the lid. Fruit came out nice with fan shaped caps.

I would stay away from grow lights because they give off UV light. A regular flourecent would be better, or indirect sunlight.

agreed, oyster do need lots of FEA and lights, go with floro lights. if your fruit is small and looks like a sea coral then thats from not having enough lighting.

Oysters want high humidity and lots of light, as said. If your oysters looked like coral instead of oysters, it's light related. Fluorescents work great without putting out much heat. Get them bright and close.
