First timer questions...

I've been checking out this site for about a month now and am considering growing. After searching it a lot, I still have some questions that hopefully a veteran could help me with. 1) When dunking, I understand I am supposed to drain the cake afterwards and pat dry with a paper towel. How can I prevent airborn contams from interferring and destroying my cake. 2) Also, I've heard mention of "fanning" the cakes during the fruiting cycle- can I just leave the lid cracked on the container or make a small hole near the surface. 3) And, won't open the lid and fanning allow for contaminates to enter the chamber? 4) What kind of water should I use to soak the perlite? 5) After I have my fruiting chamber set up and place my cakes in them, how long will it be until my first mushroom is ready to be picked and dried? I don't have a humidity gauge and plan on using perlite on the floor of the container. I know this is a long post, but I never found a clear answer to these questions and I want my first time to be a success. Thanks for your time.

fully colonized caked are supposedly pretty defensive towards airborne contams so i don't think you have as much to worry about as it sounds like you are. However, you should not take them lightly as well, clean everything, i would say keep the time the cakes are sitting around in the open to a minimum.
No you cannot just open the lid, you fan to replace the build up of CO2 with fresh air, if you don't fan the CO2 will just build up in the bottom of the FC and screw up pretty much everything.
for the perlite im pretty sure you can just use tap water but would be advisable IMO to use clean bottled spring water or distilled water.
BUY a humidity gauge.
And im pretty sure there is no way to accurately predict how long it will take for your cakes to fruit. It's all about the conditions you create.
Now you can take my words as advice or ignore me. I am about to start my first grow and i haven't been here long but i learn fast and read faster. Im sure my advice will probably be backed up by some.

I don't mean to jack this topic, but I have questions regaurding yours.
If I buy a barrometer do I just place it anywhere in the fruiting chamber?
If I use a fruiting chamber that consists of a sterilized/sealed cooler would a damp towellet(or multiple) on the bottom of the chamber be a good source of humidity?

You would want to place the gauge close to the same level that you are growing in the FC.
No, that is not a good idea at all. Perlite is VERY cheap if you want to go that route. For that sake a bag of lava rocks is 3 bucks, a bubble stone is 2 bucks and a fish pump and hose is about 10bucks at walmart. then you have an automated PMP.

I do have prelite, and right now I'm just learning the ropes of all this stuff. I'm collecting stuff for a grow and learning at the same time. You know, sort of like hit the ground running. If you could explain more into the prelite's role that would be sweet. Or a link.

I use a little perioxide in my water for the perlite just to be a little extra safe of cleaning.

typicall you lay down a bed of perlite that is pre-moisterized, the cakes are then birthed onto the perlite usually on the jars lid or sometihng else. Seal the chamber, monitor humuidity, and open and fan a few times a day then reclose.

The method I was looking into using is the 50/50 mix of peat moss/vermaculite for my casing. Using this( http://www.shroomery.org/index.php/par/23805 ) method of making a fruiting pan.
I plan to store my fruiting pans inside either a sealed cooler or a decent sized box of some sort. However I have questions. If you add all the water needed in these steps is it a must to keep the humidity anywhere from 90-99%? If so, what is a good way to do this. Cheaply is what I'm going for. Anything that I can do with around the house stuff?
However I might look into making myself an aquarium version of this. It may be easier for me to manage. My only current worries are tempature control/maintainence and the same for humidity.

look up PMP. poor mans pod, it pretty much rocks if you not building a martha or something larger. You can easily maintian the lower RH's for casings or modify it to bring you the high rh'd for cakes. mines at 90-92% constant for casings.

I was looking at trying to do a nice layer of substrate in mine so I could have the possiblity of a larger yield across the board. I think I would much wrather do it than just have flat out cakes. However I could slice up the cakes into smaller sections of log and do it that way, a nice happy medium.
I'm looking for something that is going to yield nicely, not just a few. Maybe I'm greedy, but I also want to learn this way for future grows.

just go to the casings section and stay there for a day or two and just read everything in there.

Thank you for your help. But what kind of stores can I buy a humidity gauge without spending a lot of money?

Thanks guys. I'd like to ask another question... I followed the tek for outdoor growing. It just rained a lot here the last couple days and is raining today too. The day temp is about 87 and the night temp is around 72 with a RH of 90%. I just spread the cakes out two days ago. How long should it be until I see shrooms popping up?

hard to say, the best answer is when the conditions are met for for fruiting. If you crumbled the cakes up before laying them in the bed they'll need some time to recover and colonize the area before fruiting. Guesstimate from me would be anywhere from 1-3 weeks as long as the environment is right.

When is the best time to look for them? I know that if the temp gets above 100 they will die, but I don't thik that is going to happen. Should I look around 9 pm at night, 4 in the morning? 10 in the morning?
