Man...
I've never really thought about it before, but the universe is fuckin crazy. Looking at how big the universe is I dont even doubt if Extra-Terrestrial life exist. Whats some good books to read on this stuff or some good writers? I want to learn more on this stuff.

My astro professor brought up an excellent point about life in the universe last semester.
The universe is clocked at about 56 billion years old, a long long time. Humans have been around for what, 20,000 years? Radio waves, or any wavelength for that matter, a long time to get anywhere in the distant universe, and the same amount of time to get back.
The point is, sure, there probably was life elsewhere in the universe, and will be there someday, but the chances of it being in our measly frame of time, and us hitting them with radio waves, and those waves coming back, is, well, astronomical.

I've heard it estimated by several sources to be between 5 to 15 billion. Maybe you misheard of he mispoke?

That depends... if aliens have been broadcasting for billions of years, all we have to do is start listening. Who really cares about getting a response right away.
But look at us. We're blaring radio waves out into space right now, and we probably will be for millions of years to come (assuming we make it that long). Other civilizations might be doing the same thing, and who's to say how long other civilizations last?
