Who here has successfully quit smoking?

Honestly...
I'm in the process. My last cigarette was at 5:45am and I've been tweakin' since lol. I really want to do this. I want to join the Y or something and start swimming, and just basically getting into shape.
How long before you stopped fiending? What changes did you notice once you were off the influence of nicotine? Did your lungs get stronger? I'm interested in your stories

I quit cold turkey a little over a year ago. After the first few days the constant nagging addiction goes away. From there, it's just when you get angry or stressed that you think you need one. (or if you have a conditioned time for them... after a meal or sex)
Main thing though is to have an alternate for what you do in a given situation.
If I got a craving for a cigarette I would eat or workout. A snack or a hundred pushups/situps.
After sex = eat/workout
After food = eat/workout
Driving = drink something
Drinking alcohol = cigar
And ofcourse smoking weed helps in any of these situations. I smoke more blunts now then ever.

Yeah I was curious about that too. I was taught to smoke a cig after a bowl/bong/vape/anything... It's going to be nice to be able to enjoy my weed. Actually taste it for once and not worry about killing my lungs with a cig afterward. I'm basically using the pro's to drive me through the con's- if that makes sense. (The worse I feel=the better I feel)

Clean lungs and full breath. You can tell after only a week. That first deep breath after waking up is awesome. Food tastes again. You have more energy.
Smoking has become a turnoff to me now, though. If I see a girl smoking I won't date her.

I've only been smoking for 2 years, but I smoked pretty heavily. I started after 2 life-changing events took place and couldn't stop ever since. I'm past those hard times and I really want to improve my health. I figured dieting and quitting cigs would be the place to start.

Quiting helped me with my diet. Kinda gave it a kick in the ass. Since I used eating as a way to curb my cigarette cravings, I had to start eating better. I ate all the time and had to make sure it was healthier food.
There isn't an inbetween. You'll either quit or you won't quit. So when you get to a spot where you think it'll be o.k. for just one... stop what you are doing and change your state of mind. Run, eat, jerk-off... whatever it takes to change your state of mind. The craving will go with your mind state.

i quit smoking 4 years ago and feel much better now. Cigs are even so harsh now that i can barely smoke them. In the time that i quit i would say ive prolly smoked about 10 cigs, in 4 years. You sound like you really want to quit, so it shouldnt be too hard, wasnt for me, and i smoked half a pack a day for 8 years.

I tried quitting once before, made it 3 days. It was weird before though. I still wanted to smoke...it was still fun, still calmed me down...so I just started again. This time I feel like I have to. That nasty taste when you have too many, running out and being broke, or simply needing to have them with you at all times is getting old fast. I'm 20, and I said by 25 I'd quit...I feel like the time is now. Thanks for the info and advice, I need all I can get lol. I'll keep updating my progress if anyone cares. Someone at work today told me 11 days and you're cool; even when others light up around you. Truth or depends?

It shouldn't bother you but don't push it. Situations like these kind of wake you up to how easily and fast a few moments can slip away. You'll be surprised by your ability to realize at anymoment you have a cigarette in your mouth. I'd always have bad dreams where I was dissappointed in myself for smoking in the dream.

I'm definitely needing to stop smoking- it's depressing to watch yourself die from good ol' "Fuck It, I'm healthy" attitude. I'm constantly wielding metal and all that Argon makes it even worse + I smoke when my girl smokes making me want one too and no i won't leave her because she hits a the cigarets, it's just like i used too. I've smoked for like 8 years and it's been part of many deepening memories, on the whole spectrum from stress to healing, in the past. Now i feel that its time i rescue that high-schooler from drowning in it's own mucus and curses. Damn not damming the tabaccoo cigaret, its no respectful way to smoke the leaf anyway. I want other shroomers to hear this and glee with me to stop the positive cell growth genocide happing to our lungs.
PS: people should be able to smoke on air planes if it's a long flight.

Been 17 years for me now. Took up Kung Fu for a while when I quit. Smoked 2 packs a day of Lucky Strike non-filter for quite a few years before I quit. The chemical addiction was gone in about 4 days. You really have to keep yourself busy almost constantly for a while. My wife still smokes. I have no cravings whatsoever. Good Luck to you.

I started smoking cigarettes back when I was 13. I obviously couldn't buy them myself, so my mother would buy them for me. We were all weak back then.
I gave up smoking when I found out I was pregnant with my second child. A year later...I started smoking again. Everyoe around me did. It was very tempting.
Finally 2 years ago, I gave it up completely after I started dating a non-smoker. He didn't ask me to give it up...I just did.
I stay away from cigs now for good. Keep yourself occupied. Chew on some gum.

my last cigarett was 6 years ago this august. i quit cold turkey. i gained like 30lbs in about the first year. i only now have been able to get a grip on my eating habits and begin to lose most of that weight.
its a bitch but well worth it.
ild say the first month was the roughest.
i craved it for the first 4 years. then about two years ago i noticed i was over it. i nver get a craving for it now. in fact im disgusted by it and the thought of nicotine in my sysetem turns my stomach. im so glad i quit. it really gives a toxic physical feeling not to mention aweful breath and after taste.
here in ny its $7 a pack and i was smoking a pack a day.
im so ovedr it now but it took a long time. you'll never quit because you dont like it anymore. no matter when you quit you'll still want to keep smoking. the sooner you quit the better and you'll probably live a much longer life as a result.
good luck and stay with it.

I am really thinking about quitting, I am gonna go buy some nicotine gum next week when I get paid, cutting down doesnt work for me, I go through too many withdrawal symptoms. Plus I like to drink, so I want a cigi after I get a good beer buzz. I never tried the gum or patch before.. But I never have successfully quit, except years ago.. I went 8 months without a cigarette. Smoking sometimes when I drank beer.. is the reason why i started smoking again.

Yeah, about a month, the best smoke quitting plan I've been on, the one where I have no choice, but thats going to end soon,
Your talking about bud right, If its cigarettes, then this whole topic is gay, to me how could anyone have trouble quitting such a lame drug,
Its like saying I'm having a hard time quitting McDonald's, there's no excuse for that shit,

Bud was easy for me to quit, I haven't smoked pot for 11 months now exactly, and I used to be an everyday pot head too. Smoking tobacco is hard to quit...trust me. I have been smoking for over 15 years too.

Cigarettes are hard becuase of conditioning. The cravings can be fought off pretty easily, you just don't smoke it's as easy as that. It's when you come to a point where you are used to having a cig (waking up, after a meal, etc..) that gets difficult. You can't smoke anymore and you have to find something else. I just chew gum and eventually forget about the cigarette, call it a personal victory, and move on.

I'm sure it is, it being the most addictive besides heroin, but it still comes down to willpower, the thing is you've probably convinced yourself that you need it, for some reason or another, that you don't totally want to quit, I think addiction has to do alot with beliefs, It becomes a part of your daily functioning, and without its like all this stress is on you, but thats bullshit, I've never fiene for cigs in my life, I know I'm not missing out on anything

I feel bad for people who starting seriously smoking. I could just never get into it. The only time a really like smoking is when im fucked up.
When im sober = half a pack - a pack a week when im on dex = a pack in two hours, maybe 2 when im high = a pack a day when im drunk = wake up and all my cigs are gone
I just recently smoked my last cig, and even put it out a drag early. I just said to myself "its bad enough that i do all of this other shit"
smoking felt the worst thing i could do for myself. That was 6 days ago. I constantly want one, but dont think that i could bring myself to it. Just makes me sick.
i hope you all can get healthy

I have a general question for the people who quit for months and then started agian. WHY? like what made you pick a cigarette up again? After all that time? what made you want to actually smoke, what was so different that time around than any other time you craved one?
I gotta say Newbie, it feels really good to read this post. I guess i quit a day or two after you did. Tracking your progress feels great at 1:30 AM when i really want a cigarette and have zero pot to distract my addiction. I'm on my 4th day and yea i totally feel you. I've been coughing a bit as well. The first two days were the hardest right? Headaches, extreme fits of anger? AH! Those first 2 days are motivation enough for me you know? Cause i know i don't want to smoke forever so the thought of picking up another cigarette and going through that first day again is... horrifying. What i've replaced with ciggies is water. on this 4th day the times i really CRAVE a cigarette is like when i walk out of the door to my house or when i get off the train. i did for about two years when i was 14. around about the time i ran out of breath going up the staris is when i realized i needed to quit. its all a mind game. if you really want to quit, then you can sit right next to a carton of squares and not even flinch. you just have to decide that you are going to quit. of you cant keep a promise to yourself, then how the hell is anyone else gonna trust you?
its really not that hard. i do remember, however, throwing up because of withdrawal...that sucked, but beer helped.;) the besst of luck to you, man.

How did I miss this thread?
I quit 7 & 1/2 weeks ago, right before I got the pupster.
Just used Nicorette inhalers for a day or so, then dumped them too.
It's all a matter of willpower. One-day-at-a-time shit. It gets easier as the Nicotine leaves your body, but the cravings continue anyway because it's such an enjoyable habit.
I just keep telling myself, "I don't do that anymore".
It's nice having my full senses of taste and smell back, but I've gained a little weight too, which sucks, but it's better than smoking.
Good luck, keep up the good work!

I am a chainsmoker and I quit last Saturday. This is day 7.
My friend quit smoking on new years eve. He said the cravings don't stop but it just gets easier to say no to a cigarette. The biggest challenge is when ur drinking. I've quit pot also. I've noticed myself being very on edge and fidgetty.
I'm keen to quit because I don't want to be a smokers statistic.

in Australia, or Tasmania at least, there is now no smoking in pubs, clubs or restaurants. Now smokers have to go outside to smoke, and a lot of venues are now adding sheltered smoking areas to their premises. This came in on New Years eve at 12:00 (1st of January officially) you should have seen it in the nightclub I was in it was fucking funny EVERYONE was charring down and relishing that last indoor-ciggie and the place was like a fucking gas chamber. Then the cops came in at 12:01 and told all the smokers to move outside.
Soon you cigarettes won't be allowed to smoke cigarettes in public places (malls, on the street etc) and only in the privacy of your own home, then after that they will ban them altogether bringing in a black market on tobacco like they did with alcohol in USA in the 30's. I think it's part of the governments way of slowly waning Australia off cigarettes to make it tobacco-free by 2020.
They're just going to fuck it up, I mean they will ban it in public places for peoples health and whatnot but I think they should think about doing the same with cars because they cause more environmentl damage than cigarettes.
Agreed?

I smoked one tonight, after 2 weeks of not smoking a cig. I fell weak. Oh well. At least I still have my goal in sight. I left the rest of the pack at my friend's house. I paid 3.78 for one cigarette. If that don't make me quit, I don't know what will.

ive paid more
ive been smoking since 16.
sometimes its hard to get a cig when only one store in the city sells to minors and your 30 miles away from it.
I paid a guy outside of a 7-11 20$ just to give me half his pack, because he didnt have a change, and i didnt feel like going inside as i was on alot of drugs
i smoked them all in one night.....
as i read this thread it makes me feel better for what i am doing.
Does anyone else recall (if you have any) your underage smoking days?
wish i wouldve quit back then. It makes it 30X harder when i dont get yelled at by cops and i can just waltz into any store and buy one.

Puritybinge - i agree with everything you said EXCEPT the part of stop hanging out with your friends that smoke and making sure they don't do it around you. I mean part of quitting is realizing that people around you smoke. If anything you should just tell your friends you want to quit and to under no circumstances let them have a cigarette even if you ask for it. sure it's easier to hang out with the friends that don't smoke. but.. again like i said, part of qutting is realizing that other people smoke and you don't, anymore.
Another motivating factor in quitting is i think realizing how gross it is. i mean REALLY looking at the effects and just gross yourself out from doing it anymore.
Blissedout!!! 2 weeks huh? Well you had ONE, but don't let that get you in the head of "well fuck it i had one i already fucked up i might as well smoke more. It doesn't seem like you'll fall into that trap seen as though you left your pack behind. Just keep it going. you had 1 cig in 2 weeks that's progress no matter what, just don't give in, remember how shitty you felt for giving in and remember how great will power is! carry around emergency candy and when the cravings get crazy have a candy.

Yea i've definitely paid more that 3.78 a pack. I smoked american spirits and i live in NY. Those shit's cost like 7.50 a pack.
I totally remember my underage smoking days, the good ol days where i never though i'd get hooked, where i remember feeling like i could quit if i wanted to with no problem. Should've done it then.

in australia it costs about $10-$14 for a pack of 25's or 30's depending on what brand.
is it $3.78 a pack in the states? If that's the case then I see why acid is $25 a hit and pills are $30-$35

I'm still clean :-) I've come to realize it really is all mental. Kind of like a false craving. I only think about them when it's a normal time for me to smoke one. I also replaced them with water. I carry water everywhere. And I went on a diet too so I'm trying to use all of these positive changes to overcome the cravings for good. I just envision myself after my diet and after my lungs clear up and I really like what I see. Keep up the battle!

Amen to that newbie! yea my friend keeps telling me , just wait till the third week when you feel like you'll be able to handle a drag , that's when it's really hard. I don't think i'll have a problem keeping this up. it really is mental after a while! Like i crave it just because i used to have it at certain points of the day. i just keep telling myself, oh i don't do that anymore. I really don't think i'll pick up a cigarette again. the first couple of days when i said that i was like, damn... no cigarette ever again!!! now i'm like "shit i don't want cyanid in my system" and it's that easy.

I wouldn't say it's THAT easy...
I still have times where my own mind is saying, "Just do it...get a pack of Newport 100's and just puff away. You live once, you're happy when you do it, plus it's been a while...you'll get light headed! Remember that niiiiice menthol cooling your lungs after a long bong rip? DO IT DO IT DO IT!"
I just wanna get a baseball bat and viloently beat the shit out of that voice. But instead I just grab my gum :-(

I never did the gum thing, Ive quit twice b4 the last time was for good tho. During a crazy trip on acid, I lost a pack of cigs and when the craving came over me I just puked, right then and there. It was just this little plop of puke but it just had this crazy vibe about it. It felt like all the evil cigs had filled me with, it was disgusting/powerful enough that I knew what I had to do. To this day I only have a cig every now and then when I'm drinking at the bar. Water is prolly the thing that got me through the hard times, when my mind would start getting the best of me Id pound a glass of water. The only bad thing is it seems like usually people trade one addiction for another, be it chewing, eating, or whatever. The trick is replace it with a healthy addiction, I took up playing foot bag and drinking alot of water, now I cant leave the house without a jug of water instead of my Marlboros!

Still going strong for almost 2 weeks now. My cravings are very minimal to none, and it's coinciding nicely with my diet. Despite an oncomming depression I have a lot more energy and I feel a whole lot better inside than when I smoked.
