Old Vermiculite
    #5792165 - 06/26/06 11:09 AM (17 years, 7 months ago)

So I had some old bags of Vermiculite and Perlite laying around in my garage that got wet from a storm... some white fuzzy mold and humidity.

Can I use this for PF tek... Sterilization I figure would be enough to get rid of the yukies...?

I'd run it a minimum of 3 cycles in the autoclave over 4 days before I used it

I just like to make sure it's all dead

lol Prisoner#1 you sure 3 cycles would be enough?

Toadstool what method of sterilization are you planing on using? If your simmering you need to start off as clean as possible. If your pressure cooking then just make sure you give it a little extra time to be sure. There really isn't anything on this planet (that I'm aware of) that can survive a couple hours in the PC at 15 p.s.i.

Verm IS pretty CHEAP tho.

Thanks guys for the advice... I will be using a P.C.

I know a few hours should be enough to kill anything, Verm is cheap... but I have about 4 3ft. bags... Another project didnt work out and I need to do something with it.

you can bake the hell out of it too. verm won't "burn" so crank your oven up all the way in the 400's, lay it out in a tray and let it go a while in there prior to use. should be as effective as a good long PC'ing but probably easier to do.
