Possibly Agaricus campestris? What are the characteristics of the cap and stem? Persistent ring? Is the cap scaly at all? What does the mushroom smell like?

Hey nobhdy, Agaricus campestris would be my first guess. The gills should turn brown with age.

A. campestris officially has a partial veil that leaves a ring, but if you read the descriptions they will usually have the word evanescent which means the ring has a strong tendency to disappear. It's not at all unusual to find that species without any trace of a ring on the stem.
They also don't bruise (unlike many Agaricus species) and have little or no odor. If you can't detect any odor other than the smell of the earth they came from, try crushing the stem base with your fingertips and sniffing there a bit more. Also watch the flesh at the stem base when you do this to see if it turns yellowish.
Happy mushrooming!

thats exactly it and thanx for the little lesson in veils. also, the gills did turn brown...now, is it edible?
EDIT: i did a search and it says its edible. i ate thema and they had a nice, nutty taste about them, but my moputh seems a little sensitive afterwards...is this normal?

I haven't heard of that one before.
The typical symptoms of the poisonous Agaricus species are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and severe headaches.
The thing you hopefully checked for (and i alluded to above) is an unpleasant odor, often described as metallic or like library paste.
A possible source of problems with any mushrooms is that they can concentrate environmental toxins, for example pesticides (weed killer). Hopefully the area you picked these form hadn't been sprayed with anything. That's the main reason I stick to mushrooms from the deep woods for eating.
Happy mushrooming!
