I want to start a nice compost heap, I've done some basic research, but I just wondering if any of you had any tips that could prove useful?

Also, how bad does it smell?

hey
It really shouldnt smell bad if it is done properly, the mistake that people often make is putting meat and dog shit in,these just attract flies=maggots and vermin.
I use the "hot compost"method, basically as you build up the layers of the compost, you wet down each layer with water.Every 4-5 layers you add an activator eg spadeful of soil or horse poo. This adds micro-organisms to the compost, which assist in the breakdown process.
An important factor that is often overlooked is a thing called the Carbon/Nitrogen ratio, for the compost to work successfully this needs to be followed. The ratio is 25 Carbon to 1 Nitrogen.Carbon things include-newspaper,cardboard,dried/brown leaves,tea/coffee grinds, small twigs etc.Nitrogen is pretty much anything green and Activators(micro-organisms) can be soil, rotted manure, comfrey and also off the shelf varieties.
It is called a "hot compost" because when done right it will heat up to about 70-90 degrees Celsius(in the centre). At these temperatures Thermophilic bacteria thrive, and these bacteria will quickly make a meal out of your molehill!

Anyways,I hope this helped you out a bit,if you want I can post a compost diagram? Happy composting!

Thats the one I was going to do!

You just make a layer of 25 carbon to 1 nitrogen, wet it down, and then put soil over the top of it, and start another layer and repeat. How often should the stuff be mixed up?

Yeah pretty much

Turn the pile once or twice a week, for the first month or so.This is when the majority of degradation occurs, this will keep the centre of the pile nicely heated.

After 12 weeks to months this will start to convert to compost and then hopefully mature into the final product.

Sometimes it pays to have two bins to compost with, the first being where you make it and let it degrade, then when it converts you shift it to the second bin to mature, that way you are creating a constant cycle.
