Need Some Identification Help ~ THANKS!!!
    #5789068 - 06/25/06 10:29 AM (17 years, 7 months ago)

wow, I would like to start off by saying, I really like the new layout of this board... I just came across some mushrooms and I need a little help identifying them, I live in mid-michigan and found them in a horses field...

The horse field which I found them in contained a lot of horse poo.

Caps are the size of a quarter +

Spore print is on its way...

bruises dark brown/red

smells like a normal mushroom

a white milky substance on the bottom of the stem.

Without a proper description you won't be able to get more than a guess. I would guess that these look promising. Read the sticky on making a proper ID request please.

Nice pictures! Notice how long that stipe is, one of the characteristics of Panaeolus retirugis.

I could be wrong, never found them so I'm just regurgitating what I've read.

I was trying to get this picture open up all the way cause it wouldnt....so was playin with it to see if I could get it to open on preview (wasnt expecting too much)....but accidentally posted it....still playing with it right now.....(any one wants delete please feel free).......HEY.....WHY doesnt it want to open UP ???

Hey Bobby if your still around see if you can any more close ups with the lighting highlighting more of that purple bruising on the stem......your pics are alot clearer than the out of focus / pixelated Rogers pics ( he does that on purpose)

The first pics the stems are obscured...(but as you see I didnt really need the bruising visible in the second pic for this one anyway)

The Rogers pictures you use to try and identify your mushrooms are purposely blurred and pixelated as he's in the buisiness of selling them......the pics show all stages of growth for Panaeolus retirugis with only the two later staged mushrooms on the left being discernable and possibly useful but the variable Retirugis will not always display those extreme characteristics in later stages......but the stages in the Rogers pictures on right which would be applicable for comparison to the stages in growth of the clear pics submitted for identification are barely descernable from any of several other genera let alone the delineating characteristics of cap structure which seperate the two species......and the pics of Campanulatus are just as useless for showing the taxonomic differences seperating the two......do you know what these taxonomic features are ?......they can be very subtle depending on lighting at earlier stages.....were you just using the pixelated pics or did you have some specific taxon you've used to seperate these for all these years ?.......
Have ever found Retirugis or seen it before ?
