Grow bags
    #5789032 - 06/25/06 10:06 AM (17 years, 7 months ago)

Hi,
I want to try using spawn bags as described in http://www.shroomery.org/index.php/par/28017. That method suggests sealing the breathing filtered bag with an impulse sealer AFTER cooking. My question is, can I seal the bags BEFORE cooking them? I have no way of getting an impulse sealer and other methods as I understand have a greater contamination risk. I could let them cook for a longer time to ensure reliable heating even by conduction only, and the breathing filter should allow pressure equalisation.
Also, some commercial grow bags suggest opening the bag only when the first crop is ready. Can I do the same with a home made grow bag? What size should it be so that it would be able to provide its own heat and humidity?
Thank you

You can seal the spawn bags before pressure cooking them, but only if you use pre-sealable spawn bags. They have a special filter patch which allows for more gas expulsion. A standard spawn bag will blow up on you for sure. Check the description for the right bag before you order. I prefer to seal the bags after the pressure cooking. I have 30 bags under my belt and not a single contaminate. Blue Helix's tek is truly the way to go in my opinion.

I personally do not fruit in vitro, which is what your second question implies. I allow the bag to colonize completely, crumble inside the bag, lay out in my tubs, case and fruit.

The home made grow bag is going to depend on what you're using for materials, but yes, you can fruit in vitro.

The heat is going to be determined by the substrate and outside ambient temperatures. If you are using a bulk substrate comprised of horse manure, no outside temperature influence is required as long as you can keep the room temperature between 65-75 degrees. Humidity will be provided by the substrate moisture content. Spawn bags, especially using a bulk substrate like horse manure, should be kept a little on the dry side for optimal results. Your substrate should have just enough moisture to only get a few drops when doing a hard squeeze.

It sounds like you want to fruit in vitro. You should consider other methods if you're going to be using spawn bags. First and foremost, if you're going to fruit in vitro you can only use a small amount of substrate compared to Blue Helix's method. If you use too much substrate you will not have enough room for any appreciable growth and will just end up wasting substrate. Because you use less substrate per bag, you use more bags. This means added expenses. Using Blue Helix's tek is all about efficiency.

Good luck to you.
