Liquid Culture

I have been using light malt extract for some time now and noticed certain irregularities in the mycelium. Sometimes it all floats at the top, sometimes it sits pretty compact on the bottom, and sometimes it stands like a very nice structure evenly throughout the jar. In my opinion, the ones that float on the bottom and top look less healthy. Usuaully this only starts happening if I have had the malt sitting around too long. Is this a sign of the mycelium dieing? What is the cause of this?

The 'placement' of mycelium is different, and does not indicate death or anything,

This is a pic of 500ml malt with 3 weeks of mycelium colonization. It recieves a thorough shaking once a day. This one is a pretty well broken up cloud of mycelium that every day collects itself at the top. The second pic is of that same jar but slightly stirred. My situation is that I have left the LC sitting around too long (without refrigerating it) and am wondering if it may be dead. For that matter, what does it take, time-wise, for mycelium to die in LC? I have quite a bit of it and would really prefer to not go ahead with the next step unless I'm very certain that my LC is not dead. Doing so would lose me quite a bit of money .
The only reason I believe that my LC may not be 100% healthy is that pretty much all of my jars became of a different texture uniformly, as time wore on. In the beginning, the mycelium was a fluffy structure and broke up into tiny white strands. Now, the mycelium is either sitting at the top or bottom with no structure to speak of and when shaken breaks up into tiny dark, almost powdery pieces. Could this be because of the daily vigorous shaking in conjunction with the mycelium stopping growth for some reason?
PS. I am almost 100% certain that there are no contams involved with my malt, so that is not one of the possibilities. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That happens to me also. I don't know why it happens, but I have experienced no problems related to it. I notice the same mycelium shifts from top to bottom. I think it might just have to do with the state of the mycelium, like how much air is trapped around or in it. I don't know, I would like some info about this as well.

Best thing to do would be to test it out on a couple jars before blindly shooting up a bunch of jars.
As long as your LC has been kept at room temps it should be fine. I've had an LC sit around for over a month before and had not problems when I finally got around to useing it. However I have found mycelium performs best when it isn't left to sit idle.
As far as the inconsistencies in appearance you should check out this post lots of info on various topics throughout. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/5484818#Post5484818 http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/5485182#Post5485182

just like poop in a toilet... Sometime you got floaters, and sometimes you have sinkers. It's one of those unanswered questions... (mysterious)

if your poop is sinking, youre not drinking enough water and you're dehydrated. so your body sucks all the water from your poopy that it can.
completely off topic. but good to know.
