I know this guy who bought oyster shell. The stuff is crushed decently, but I would think it should be a fine powder if he would want to add it to substrate for the calcium carbonate. Do you think he should buy a coffee grinder to crush it more?

One thing about that website- I believe there is a $5 fee for orders under $20, unless they changed that since the last time I ordered.

If you're on the West coast check these guys out.
Oyster Shell Lime
I'm in Colorado and it cost me $36.00 including shipping. That's $1.39 a pound, shipped. They're out of California so too far East will be murder on shipping.

If you browse their catalog, you will notice this. http://www.groworganic.com/item_F610_NewEraCompost1CubicFt.html Take my word. Don't order it. It is not worth a dime for mush/cult. It is like baked cow manure & turns to MUD. It contains almost no fiber. It sounds good, but ISN'T.
This is a good trace mineral supplement, though. http://www.groworganic.com/item_F017_KelpMeal5LbBox.html
http://www.groworganic.com/item_PSO114_CocoPeat45CuFtBrick.html This is also a good buy, when in stock. But, shipping cost is a factor.
http://www.groworganic.com/item_PSO352_VermiculiteMedium35CuFtBag.html 38 lb bag of medium grade Verm. Again, shipping cost is a factor.

Thanks guys. I might see if I can grind the stuff by mabye pounding it in a bag with a hammer. If that doesn't work well enough, then I'll order the oyster shell flower.

If you have the feed store "chicken scratch" oyster shell? It is as tough as rocks. It will simply pound holes in the bag. It will also wreck a coffee grinder. (speaking from experience)
Get the flour kind.

If you've got some oyster shell the is not ground very fine, you might try this. I once got some that was pretty chunky. So I took a hand-full, figuring I might as well try something since I couldn't use it, and put it in a pot of water and boiled for a while. When I strained it and let the water settle, there was a thick layer of very fine powder.
Pour off the water and you may have some fine oyster shell for PH adjustment. Someone correct me if I am wrong. Thanks.
