Help ID'ing Pinning Mushrooms
    #5785316 - 06/23/06 10:29 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

Hey! First post, so I'll do my best here.

I picked some pinning mushrooms today to attempt to identify and possibly cultivate them.

*Habitat
-Cincy, Ohio, US area
-found them in the woods about 5 hours after a heavy rain (3 or more hour, heavy downpour)
-majority were growing out of old, decomposing acorns
-in a mossy area of pine(?) trees

* Characteristics of the gills
-off-white
-not attached to the stem

* Characteristics of the stem
-thin (needle-like)
-1-2" long
-varying in color from a tan to a dark reddish brown from stem to stem

* Characteristics of the cap
-no bigger than a pencil eraser (1cm and under)
-rough-looking, with red brown stripes radiating from a very dark(almost black) dot in the center (small dark pin-prick size dot with a slightly larger dark circle around the smallest dot, and a tan outer edge
-slightly conical, umbrella shaped

* Spore print color
-i will post when the print is done

* Color that the mushroom bruises
hard to tell on such a small stem, but looks dark brown

* Scent of the mushroom
kind of a fresher "pine" scent compared to grocery store mushrooms

Awesome information!!  It is very difficult to ID pins, for a multitude of reasons, mainly that most photos available for species comparison are of mature specimens, as well, pins can appear vastly different in appearance to their mature counterparts.  A photo would be of great help.  Also, if it is not inconvenient, go back to the spot and see if you can locate any mature mushrooms of the type listed and take a photo of those, as the tiny pins may have dried out by now.
Good Day :smile:

DO not attempt to id any pinnerss. Even poisonous shroom pinners can reseml;e some active and edible pinners.

If you do not have spores, which pinners do not than do not trry to identify them.

While edibles are common in wooded areas, but hardly abundant, I can say it is hard to grow some of the edibles. At least form bringing them home to grow from the woods.
