Just wondering if anyone knows or has tried to use the mushrooms bought from the store to somehow cultivate them...
Is this even possible?

Ive always wanted to do oysters from the store, but i wouldn't know if they were the regular oyster or the sub tropic variation, so Ive never attempted it.

I've grown cultures from both shiitake (L. edodes) and morel (M. esculenta) from the store. For shiitake I simply took tissue from the stalk using aseptic technique and put it on malt extract agar. I did the same with morels, with the exception of simply taking a small piece of tissue from the top of the mushroom. One of these days I will probably work up Hen of the woods and the king oyster in a similar manor.
There is the question of longevity of the cultures since they didn't originate from sexual reproduction, but as I've done fine using low passage cultures.

Hmm, I may try this. I think I've caught the bug, and this would be an interesting experiment, not to mention seemingly cheaper and easier than going through a vendor.
thanks for smacking me in the face with the idea

hmm, with reports that it wouldn't cause much potency loss by barely bringing it to a boil, that does make me giggle at the possible outcome.
As a result, I would predict an economic boom on ebay... lol
