Hpoo weight/spawn ratio question - Please Assist!!
    #5784389 - 06/23/06 05:10 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

I've literally been searching the boards for an answer to this for 4 hours straight now; finally, I have given in and decided to create a thread.

Okay, a lot of people seem to be using 2 quarts of spawn per 5 lbs of Hpoo.  Here's my question:

Does this mean that you're/they're using 2 quarts of spawn per 5 lbs of DRY poo, or is it 2 quarts of spawn per 5 lbs of WET poo?  Nobody ever specifies if they're talking about wet weight or dry weight.

Even on the Tennstud site it says: "One 5lb bag will fill a 12X12 container to a depth of about 4 inches."

But it doesn't say if that's a 5lb bag of pre-pasteurized (wet) poo, or if it's a 5lb bag of unpasteurized (dry) poo.

  :crying: :emocry:

 Really?!

THANK YOU!  I've got a big trash bag full of dry poo that weighs ~25 pounds, and I was worried that it might not be enough for more than 5 grows.

May your poo be covered in firefang. :poopontoast:

LOL

Yep, wet poo it is. People who talk about it just assume you know that if its going in the tray and spawning, that you know that its wet (pasteurized) so they don't think to specify. Once you get a little experience, you'll understand

Yeah, I had just read a tek a few months ago that advised you to initially fill a tub (monotub style) with enough poo for the desired substrate depth, take the poo out, weigh how much it is (for future reference) and then pasteurize it.  That way you know exactly how much of your dry poo that you'll need to get the proper substrate depth before you pasteurize it each time.

That was just one of the teks that I read and that part got stuck in my head so now I was confused.

BTW, 5 shrooms for you!

Im trying to picture the volume difference in 5lbs of hpoo and 2 quarts of spawn. Could one increase that ratio of hpoo up to 10lbs? Wouldent it just mean it would take longer to colonise the sub? or is there a greater risk of contamination with a higher ratio as such?

Wet or dry, poo has the same volume. When you are trying to get the ratio of spawn to poo, it's volume, not weight that you are concerned about. 1:5 - grain spawn:poo is average. I like to go about 1:4 to help speed things up.

Oh yeah , that's right , lol .

I agree with you on the ratio . I actually use a 2:5 ratio , sometimes more

So , whoever was thinking about 2 quarts of WBS to 10 pounds of poo , I wouldn't recommend it .
