Sleep
    #5784284 - 06/23/06 04:10 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

Attention all spiritual sojourners, ascetics, monks, yogis, et al.

I have a very simple question: What is the best way to sleep?

By this I don't mean the most comfortable way, but the most natural way for your body to rest.  A hard-wood floor? A mat? A water bed? A bed of nails and rocks?

In what position should the body rest?  Flat on its back, in the yogic corpse position?  Gently on its side?  Stomach?

I feel that my bed is inadequate and is hurting my yoga, thus my ability to meditate and reflect.  It is somewhat firm but sags slightly where my back is, which is the most important place to have support.  When I sleep on my stomach my back caves inward which feels unhealthy, and on my sides I feel unbalanced and tend to get knots in my neck.

I don't sleep with a pillow, but am unwilling to renounce the entire bed until I'm sure I won't do any permanent damage sleeping on a mat or on the floor.

Any suggestions?  :sun:

I thought a pillow is good for your neck....

and a stone floor should help align your spine but takes time to get used to sleeping like that since certain positions will cut off circulation, which is bad.

Everyone has their own sleeping habits.

Its hard to project mine onto yours because they may not work for you.
Its sounds like your bed is at its end, might be time to buy a new one.

I usually sleep on the floor, i got used to it and now i don't really like beds anymore.
That would kill some people, but for me its ok.
As long as your comfy i don't think where/how you sleep affects you too much.

I may be wrong though !

If you worry that your uncomfortable before you go to sleep, you either are uncomfy so you need to find a new place to rest, or your thinking about it too much.
Both of these might cause you to wake up feeling achy.

Ideally I suppose I would sleep on the earth, on the ground, in order to be well grounded for sleep.

However that's not terribly practical so I just sleep on a simple futon on the floor with a pillow.

Do you always sleep flat on your back?

i usually sleep on my side with a folded leg for balance and an extended one (the sole of the foot next to my knee) and either hug the pillow with the corner of it beneath my neck or use my folded arms as a pillow... i try to extend my self as much as i can as well...

i've often pondered about this my self but could never conclude anything.
i guess as long as you don't strain your back or neck it doesn't really matter where or how you sleep

of course it should be comfrtable enough to allow you to change positions through out the night without waking up :smirk:

Nah usually I sleep on my side. I actually gave my sleeping position some thought a few months ago because my shoulder was starting to hurt, so I switched from having my arm folded with my head resting on it to having my arm going downward bent at the elbow, with only the pillow supporting my head.

I'd say just go with whatever is comfortable though

The problem is that when I sleep in many of the positions I find comfortable, it puts a lot of strain on my back or neck and I can feel it the next day.  I think the most healthy thing for your neck and back is to sleep in the corpse position on a firm surface with a small pillow supporting your neck, but that is one of the least comfortable positions for me.

Oh yeah I've found that too sometimes actually. Maybe just chill out and relax in that position during the day and then at night it'll seem more natural and comfortable?

Lying on your back with the spine straight and aligned is the best way, but I can only sleep on my side. As for what to sleep on... I've read in Be Here Now that sleeping on a hard surface is best but i dont know for sure

I never lie on my stomach or back.

This is how I sleep:

On my right side, if I turn to my left side I feel unequal like my body is moving more then one way. and w/ 4 pillows in the back of my head, sometimes I'll sleep with the covers covering my head but only the front of my face sticking out...just something I did when I was younger ;D
